His hand around my throat squeezes, and his other digs into my hair, pulling it hard enough to bring tears to my eyes.

‘I’ll give you what you deserve,’ he snarls, turning me to face the tree.
I grip onto it hard, burying my face into the side of my arm as he holds me in place firmly and lifts my clothes to bare my legs and arse to him.
I expect him to do what he said he was going to and just fuck me without mercy, but instead of spearing me with the weapon between his legs, there’s a pause, and then I hear a whistle through the air and the crack of a switch against the backs of my thighs. I jerk against the tree with a loud cry of pain, and he hisses a swear. He pushes a cloth into my mouth, and he hits me again, this time across my arse. My muffled cry sounds, and I lever myself away from the tree to run from him, but he’s so much stronger that he just pushes me back to where he wants me.
‘No,’ he growls. ‘You’re going to stand there and be a good girl. You’re going to take what you deserve.’
He swings the switch again, but his hand, keeping me against the tree, gentles as he hears the sob I can’t contain.
‘Stand there and take your due, or don’t,’ he tells me calmly. ‘I won’t stop you if you flee back to the others.’ He steps in closer. ‘But you need this, don’t you,’ he whispers.
I look back at him, another sob breaking free. He didn’t say deserve, he said need, and I realize he’s right. There’s something about this that feels vital. My eyes search his, and I find his anger gone.
I bury my face back in my arm for the rest of my impromptu sentence, and he takes my staying for assent.
‘Five more,’ he says, and I don’t move, gripping onto the tree as he whips me. Every strike elicits a squeal, and my body trembles against the bark, but I don’t move, and I don’t try to escape.
I count them to four, and on the last one, he breaks his rhythm.
‘Spread your legs for me.’
My breathing stutters, but I do as I’m told, widening my stance and hearing the whistle of the stick; a loud cry ripped from me as the tip of it hits my mound.
‘One more,’ he says, and I let out a wail, ‘for telling me what you deserve. I will give you what you deserve. Understand?’
I nod, rising on my toes as he gives me the last lash between my legs and making me scream behind my makeshift gag.
I hear him throw the switch to the ground, and he turns me to face him, taking in my tear-stained cheeks and my ragged breath. He pulls the cloth from my mouth, panting as hard as me as he stuffs it into his pocket. He searches my eyes, grasping my face with both hands as he thumbs away the tears on my cheeks. Neither of us moves or speaks. We just stare at each other, locked into whatever it was that just happened.
‘Where’s that firewood?’ Grey calls out from just inside the tree line, and Kallum immediately steps back, his hands falling away from my face as if my skin burns him.
‘Fuck,’ he whispers, looking away from me. ‘I’m sorry. I didn’t …’
