I take a look around at the flowers adorning the room. Such elegance for something as stupid as my mom getting married again.

“You know, Syn, you look just like your name in that dress.” The feel of ice skating down my spine causes me to shudder involuntarily, and Ry doesn’t miss it.

“And you look like an ass,” I respond, trying to keep myself together. He chuckles but leads me into the room, stopping to greet people on our way to the front, where my mom is with Brady. The closer we get, the more I tense, and I know Rylan can feel it. He glances at me several times but remains silent as we approach the two of them.

“Rylan! So good to see you, honey,” my mom greets him as he pulls away from me, and she pulls him into a hug. Brady moves to do the same, pulling me in.

“That dress is going to look amazing when I hike it up around your waist and fuck you from behind.” His words send another cold chill down my spine before I quickly pull back, grabbing Ry’s arm. He doesn’t act surprised, and I don’t give anything away.

“Tamsyn. I thought you were wearing a red dress tonight,” my mom says, looking me over.

“I was, but it had a snag,” I reply, playing it off. I won’t say she can fuck herself right here in front of everyone, especially not with the Kings in attendance.

“Well, she does look lovely,” Brady adds, causing me to cringe inside. The word hate is just not enough for what I feel for him.

“Well, congratulations are in order to you both,” Rylan tells them. They both thank him before he pulls me along with him toward the crowd of people. I’m thankful we don’t have to stand there and talk with them because being around Brady for that long would probably kill me.

We stop and chat with a few other people before Rylan escorts me out of the room and down a long hall. I’m not sure where the hell we’re going, but when I open my mouth to ask, he spins on me. His hand comes up to grip the back of my hair, pulling roughly before he slams me against the wall.

“You want to tell me why you were so tense out there?” Play dumb, Tamsyn.

“What do you mean? I wasn’t.” The hand in my hair tugs harder, causing me to whimper.

“You were, and now I want to know why,” he argues, keeping his voice low and deadly.

“You’re wrong, Rylan. I wasn’t tense. I just don’t want to be here,” I tell him. The sting this time is enough to cause tears to burn the back of my eyes. I try to blink them away, but one runs down my cheek. Before I can reach up and wipe it away, Rylan’s lips are there. He runs his tongue along my cheek, licking the tear from my face. I suck in a ragged breath, not sure what to do or say, so I do nothing. I say nothing. Rylan pulls back, and with his free hand, he presses his thumb to my lips before slowly dragging it across my lips to my cheek. When he pulls his thumb away, he looks down at the lipstick on his finger with disgust.

“I’m pretty sure I told you I don’t like you in makeup.” A growl vibrates through him, slamming into my chest. I can’t let him push me like this. I won’t.

“I didn’t know you were making all my decisions for me,” I snap back at him. He smiles, but it isn’t a nice smile. It’s lethal, like the man himself.

“You know, Syn, one day you’re going to be a queen, and then whatever you’re told to do is exactly what you’re going to do.”

“That may very well be, but you’re not going to be my King,” I hiss back at him. Not that I would mind serving Rylan. I’ve had a crush on him for years, but I also know how he uses women to get what he wants, and I’m not one to play that game with.

“You know that for a fact?” He questions me, his dark orbs burning like wildfire through me.

“No.” The word barely falls from my lips.

“Then I wouldn’t be so sure of myself, Syn. Go clean this fucking shit off your face. I’m sick of seeing it,” he growls before releasing me and giving me a little shove. I stumble over the fucking heels since I’m not used to wearing them and nearly fall before righting myself. I watch Ry adjust his jacket and walk back toward the party while I find the nearest restroom and see what he’s done to my face.

When I step inside, I lock the door behind me and step in front of the mirror. My cheeks are stained pink from being so close to him, but he smeared my lipstick all over my cheek. There’s no fixing it now.

I set my purse on the counter and grab a cloth before wetting it and cleaning myself up. Once all the lipstick is gone, I grab my purse and head back out to the party.

“Where have you been?” Angel asks when she sees me.

“Just wandering around. What’s wrong?”

“Kasey and Jen are here.”

“Which we knew they would be,” I remind her. They, too, are princesses.

“Yeah, well, I don’t like them,” she huffs as I look over her shoulder to see them snuggled up to Rylan and Silas.

“They’re skanks. Don’t worry about them,” I tell her. She shrugs when I pull her into me and hug her. “Should we drink?”

“Won’t they miss you?” she asks.
