“You tell me.”

“You seen Rylan?” Why the hell would I have seen him? They’re his best friends. I would assume they would know his whereabouts.

“We aren’t on speaking terms,” I tell him.

“Since when?”

“Since ever. He’s your friend,” I tell him before turning back and putting more items on the table. I can feel heat behind me, someone getting closer to me. Then I feel hands coming to rest on my waist, and I jerk upright, thinking it’s Levi. My hand balls into a fist as I spin around and swing. A lot of good that did me. Rylan’s hand clamps down on my fist to the point of pain.

“Were you going to hit a King?” he asks me, his dark eyes burning straight through me.

“If he didn’t get his hands off me, yeah.” I try to pull my hand from his but he doesn’t let go, just squeezes tighter. I bite my bottom lip, trying to stifle the cry that threatens to rip from my throat.

“It wasn’t even his hands on you. They were mine.”

“And that makes it all better?” I ask him, staring into his eyes. Fuck, I could get lost in the depths of those black eyes.

“You aren’t going to hit me, Syn.” With that, he shoves my fist away from him. I flex my hand to get some feeling back into it after the death grip he had on it. His line of sight shifts, and he’s looking past me now, not at me. I start to turn to see what the hell he’s looking at, but just as I move, shots ring through the air.

I spin to face Angel, but Silas already has his arm around her, dragging her away from everything.

There’s complete chaos erupting around us. Ry pulls his gun and fires back, the sound ringing in my ears. I reach up and cover them, my head whipping around in all directions. I don’t know what the hell is happening or where to go. I start one way when Rylan grabs ahold of me and pulls me the other. He’s still firing when he shoves me behind him and keeps us moving.

I cling to the back of his shirt like my life depends on it as we move toward the parking lot.

“Get in the car!” He orders. What car? I don’t know where he wants me to go! I panic. My hands begin to tremble, but I don’t let go of his shirt.

“Get in the fucking car, Syn!” he snaps once more. I glance around, unsure what car he wants me to get into, when he jerks the door open and roughly shoves me inside. “Stay down,” he orders. Ry slams the door, and I slink down onto the floor, curling into myself. Who would shoot at a charity event? Why would they do this?

I don’t know anything at this point aside from being scared to death. The window above me shatters, and a scream rushes out of me as glass falls over me. A few more shots are fired when I hear Rylan calling out for the guys. Hot tears roll down my cheeks when I hear tires squealing on the pavement.

“Fuck! Syn’s in there!” I hear Rylan scream before the door is ripped open, and he’s dragging me out of the car. I cry out in pain as he twists my arm to get me out, but he doesn’t care. He stands me in front of him, his eyes wild and feral.

“Are you hit?” he asks, eyeing me up and down as my whole body shakes uncontrollably. “Syn! Are you hit?” he yells to get my attention. I shake my head when he shoves me at Levi.

“Stay with her,” he orders as he takes off running. I don’t know where the hell he’s going, but I don’t want to be here.

“I’m … I’m leaving,” I tell Levi. He chuckles and shakes his head.

“No, you’re not. Not until we figure this out.” He reaches for my arm, and I pull back, punching him before I spin and take off running.

I’m through the parking lot and running toward the river when I hear footsteps pounding on the pavement behind me. A scream rips out of my throat, but I keep going, keep pushing faster and faster.

As I reach the river, I see two options. I can veer left and keep going or get wet. I start heading left when I’m tackled to the ground. The air is knocked out of me, and I feel a hand on the back of my head. Whoever has me drags me by the hair toward the water.

“Stop! Let me go!” I scream, but it does no good. The next thing I know, my head is being shoved under the water. I try to hold my breath, but I wasn’t ready for this. My lungs scream for oxygen as I claw at their hands.

My head is pulled out of the water long enough for me to catch my breath before being shoved under once more. I keep trying to break free, but it’s not doing any good. Finally, I’m dragged out of the water and tossed onto the ground. I gasp for air, sucking as much as I can into my lungs as I cough and sputter.

Once I can breathe a little, I roll onto my back and look up.

“What the hell did you do that for?” I scream. A sick, devilish smile crosses Ry’s face as he glares down at me.

“You wouldn’t stop.”

“And you couldn’t have told me it was you?”

“Would that have made you stop?” he asks cocking his head to the side to study my face.
