“I hate you,” I seethe at him. The corner of lip tips up a little before he shakes his head.

“Get up.”

“Fuck off.”

“Get up, Syn,” he demands this time. I shove to my feet, and when I stand in front of him, he reaches for me. I flinch, but that doesn’t stop him. He tugs at my hair a few times before I realize what he’s doing. He’s picking the pieces of glass out of my hair.

He tosses the pieces before he starts walking. I don’t know if I should follow him or not, but considering my car is back there, I move. I’m shaking from the shooting and the cold water of the river. I wrap my arms around myself as we make our way toward the others.

Most of the people are in a large group in the middle of the field, but the Kings are all in their own group. The closer we get I can see them all talking when Ry turns to me and points at the other girls. He doesn’t have to say anything. I know he wants me to leave him alone. So I do.

“What the hell happened to you?” Angel asks when I walk over to the group.

“Rylan happened to me.”

“What? What did he do?” I wave her off and wrap my arms around myself.

“Have they said anything?” I ask, nodding toward the Kings.

“I heard Levi and Silas talking. They think it’s some rivals of theirs.”

“Shooting at everyone? At a charity event?” She shrugs.

“I don’t know. It doesn’t make much sense to me either,” she adds. We stand here watching the guys when the police show up. We’re ignored, but they head straight to the Kings. We watch as they talk to them, and then the police start to spread out and walk around. The Kings split up, some heading out with the police, some coming our way. I glance at Angel, but she isn’t paying attention to me.

I’m still shivering when Rylan grabs my arm and drags me back to his car.

“Get in,” he demands.

“My car is here.”

“We’ll get it later. Get in the car, Syn.” His demand is dark and lethal, and I know there’s no use in arguing with him. I grab the handle and yank the back door open, climbing in as Levi escorts Angel into the car before he climbs into the passenger seat.

Ry pulls out of the parking spot and then out onto the road. I don’t know where the hell we’re going, and I can’t seem to find it in me to care.

Chapter 9

Rylan

I drive us back to my dad’s house until we figure shit out. I don’t know if the girls saw anything that might be useful, and I didn’t want to stick around and deal with the cops. This was the best option for all of us.

We head inside, Silas and Levi taking Angel into the living room, but Syn stands by the door, trembling. I should have taken her home, but I didn’t want to be that far away from her. She doesn’t look up, just stares at the floor when I walk over and grip her elbow in my hand. She doesn’t try to shake me away but allows me to lead her toward the steps. Her movements are sluggish, and I know she’s probably in shock.

Leading her to my room, I shove the door open and push her inside before I close and lock the door behind us. I move through the room, grabbing a shirt and a pair of sweatpants that are going to be too big on her, but at least they’re dry.

“Take those off,” I say, nodding toward her clothes. She doesn’t look up. I walk closer to her. “Take the wet clothes off, Syn.” This time, it’s a demand. She still doesn’t look up as she grabs the hem of her shirt and pulls it over her head, letting it fall to the floor. Then she kicks off her shoes and pulls her pants down, kicking them to the side, too. I hold the clothes out to her, but she doesn’t take them. With a sigh, I lean down and hold the pants for her to step into. Her hand comes to rest on my shoulder, steadying herself so she doesn’t fall. Once I have them on her, I pull them up and tie a knot in the side to keep them up.

I grab the shirt next and pull it on her, shoving her arms through. She looks up at me, but I can’t tell what the look is in her eyes. I stand up straight, and we stare at each other for a long time before I step toward her. She counters it and steps back. We do this until her back hits the wall, and I press my body into hers. I reach for her side, slipping my hand down the front of the sweatpants I just put on her. Our eyes stay locked as I dare her to say no. But she doesn’t.

Slowly, I slide my hand into her panties while I use my foot to kick her legs apart. She spreads her legs, and I dip a finger inside of her. Syn gasps as I slowly work it in and out of her before adding another. Her pussy is so wet, my fingers sliding easily inside her. I press my face to hers, smirking at her.

“Who made you this wet, Syn?” I ask her, keeping my tone low. She doesn’t answer me, and when I pull my fingers out of her and pinch her pussy lip, she whimpers. “Tell me.”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“I … I can’t.”
