Abby and a swarm of senior cheerleaders come down the hall wearing their uniforms, looking all cute and confident. I feel like a gray house mouse compared to them.

Abby cups her hands around her mouth and shouts down the hall. “Rome!” Her eyes shoot to mine and she smirks like a little devil. “Wait up, babe. I wanna sit with you on the bus.”

“Bitch,” I mutter under my breath. A pang of jealousy slices through me, cutting me to the core. I bite the inside of my cheek, trying not to show an ounce of emotion.

Rome shoots a look over his shoulder then quickly pulls open the gym door and goes inside, completely ignoring her and calming my nerves slightly.

“What was that all about?” Brady asks.

I shrug my shoulders. “I don’t know what you mean.”

I can feel Julia and Brady watching me quietly. Like they want to say something, or want me to say something. I try to erase the grin on my face, but it won’t go away. “What?” I finally blurt out. “Why are you two looking at me like that?”

Julia’s shoulders do a little dance. “I sense some juicy secrets that need to be spilled.”

I rub the back of my neck, averting my gaze. “You’re both crazy. There is nothing juicy about my life and definitely no secrets to spill.”

Julia narrows her eyes. “She’s holding out on us, Brady.”

Brady puts his hands on his hips and steps closer, examining me like I’m an art piece on display. “I think you’re right, Julia.”

“Oh my God, you guys!” I shake my head, laughing. “I’m going home.”

I head down the hall toward the exit doors as Julia hollers, “We’ll pick you up at five. Prepare to be drilled.”

Then I hear Brady. “But not in the same way we think Rome has drilled you.”

Unbelievable. All Rome and I did publicly is speak to one another and it’s already raising suspicions. It won’t be long until everyone is talking and it gets back to Brogan and Wilder, if it hasn’t already. I need to talk to Brogan before she hears rumors from anyone else, but she’s on her way to the away game as well, so it’s going to have to wait until tonight.

As much as I know I need to stay away from Rome and end whatever is happening between us before it goes any further, I can’t. My heart is too invested.

Walking out the doors into the parking lot, I see a few students are still lingering. Bypassing them, I head for my car. Not having my own wheels for a few days really made me appreciate getting it back. The seat is good as new with no evidence of the assault on it. Let’s just hope it stays that way.

CHAPTER 29

ELODIE

“Lake,” I holler from my bedroom. “Can you come here?”

Standing in the middle of my room, I look down at the pile of clothes surrounding me. I exhale a frustrated breath and fall backward onto my bed.

“What’s up?”

I lift my head to see Lake standing at the door with a bowl of cereal in her hand.

“Are you going to the game tonight?” I ask, frustration boiling in my veins.

“Yeah. I’m riding with Mom and Grant when they get home. Why?” She walks in to stand by the side of the bed.

“I need help,” I grumble, arms spread at my sides. “I have nothing to wear that has the school colors on it.”

I learned my lesson about wearing anything that has the “Cromwell” name on it and I still haven’t had a chance to buy any Misfits apparel.

“Go get something from Brogan’s room.” She scoops a spoonful of cereal and sticks it in her mouth. “That’s what I plan on doing.”

My eyes widen, and in a split second, I jump to my feet, running toward the door. The next thing I know, Lake and I are in a race as we sprint to Brogan’s room.

I shove Lake aside, giggling, and milk topples over the bowl, spilling down the side, but I’m the first one in her closet so I win.
