“Gage approached me a couple days after Elodie moved here. He said he had reason to believe Elodie had a thing for you. He manipulated me into thinking you were falling for her, too. I told him that was crazy because…well, she’s Elodie.” She chuckles. “I mean, come on now.”

I roll my hand in the air. “Get on with the fucking story, Abby.”

“Anyways, he asked if I wanted to work with him and his cousin to get Elodie to leave town. At that time, I had no idea Winton was his cousin. In fact, I didn’t know until I found the video in my trash and saw them talking.”

“Goddammit,” I blurt out. “I didn’t delete the video from your trash folder. Of fucking course.” I slap myself on the head because this one’s on me.

“I was actually surprised myself. But when I opened it up, there it was. So, after that, I asked Gage what his connection to Winton was, because I saw them talking. That’s when he told me Winton was the one who wanted Elodie to go down because she’s the one you saved the night you got arrested.” The stupid bitch reaches for me again and it takes every ounce of willpower I have not to slap her across the face. “Why didn’t you tell me that, Rome? I thought we told each other everything.”

She’s delusional. She doesn't know a damn thing about me, and everything she does know, she heard through the grapevine.

“So you slipped something in her drink, but you said you didn’t plan to record the video and that it was a bonus. What was the original plan after the drugs took effect?”

The announcer comes through the speakers as the third quarter begins. It grabs Abby’s attention and she looks at the scoreboard. “Can we finish this later? I need to get back to my squad.”

She tries to leave, but I grab her shoulder, pushing her back. “Hell no, we’re not finishing it later. Just hurry your ass up and tell me. Why did Gage and Winton want you to drug Elodie?”

“Okay. Here’s the thing. I did it for you, Rome. But Gage did it because Winton promised him he could have Elodie when he was done with her.”

“Done what?” I stammer out each word.

“I don’t know. I guess Gage was going to take her from the party and bring her to Winton. They never told me why and I really didn’t ask because that’s their business.” She steps closer to me and puts her hands on my shoulders. “I just want you, babe.”

Okay, delusional and stupid. No blow job could have ever been worth this mess.

Shoving her hands down, I pull my phone back to call Brady. “Get your ass back to your squad. And stay the fuck away from me. For good.”

“Rome!” She stomps her tennis shoe to the ground. “Don’t do this.”

I jab a finger in the air with my phone to my ear. “Go!”

Pouting, she just stands there, and I’m given no choice but to let her listen when Brady picks up.

“Hey, man,” I say into the phone. “Is Elodie here with you and Julia? She’s not answering my calls.”

“No. She wasn’t home when we went to pick her up. Her little sister said she was going to stay with a friend of hers in Bakersfield. I tried to call her but got her voicemail.”

“Fuck!” I stomp my foot to the ground. “I need a ride home. Right now.”

“But the game…”

There has been a nagging feeling in my mind saying something was wrong and I need to see her, and now that I know I was right, I no longer give a shit about this fucking game.

“Screw the game! Meet me at the entrance now.”

I end the call and grab Abby by the shoulders aggressively. “If there is anything you’re not telling me, Abby, you better tell me now.”

Abby chuckles, another telltale sign that she’s nervous. “What more is there to tell?”

“For your sake, you better hope there’s nothing more. This is your last chance and if you miss one bit of information, I’ll make sure you’re arrested for drugging Elodie.”

When she doesn’t say anything, I give her a gentle push back and head toward the gate behind the bleachers.

“Rome, wait,” Abby says with no enthusiasm in her tone. I turn around, and for the first time, I see sincerity in her eyes. “Gage skipped the game and he’s supposed to meet up with her tonight while you’re distracted. He’s taking her to Winton at the old jail on I-96.”

I don’t even lash out or say another word as I run like hell, jumping over the gate and heading straight for the entrance to meet Brady. I know what Winton plans to do, even if Abby wants to pretend to be clueless.

I just hope we’re not too late.
