Page 44 of Hiding Desire

“He’s not doing it.”

“Fuck’s sake.” I threw my hands up, unable to cope with this overbearing man.

“I’ll swap a client with Trisha,” River said, and I gave him another apologetic look. Instead of looking annoyed, he made a fanning motion and mouthed, “So hot.”

It was a good job that he didn’t mind cavemen because good laser places were hard to find.

Eventually, after much persuasion, a terrified-looking Trisha appeared to do the laser, and Sean agreed to stand outside.

“He’s terrifying,” she told me once she finished. “Are you okay?”

I knew what she meant, and I probably should have been more scared by Sean’s behaviour, but currently, I was mortified.

“I’m fine. I’m just sorry about all the disruption.”

“Don’t worry, he’s not the first concerned boyfriend we’ve had in here.”

The term boyfriend somehow didn’t fit Sean, but I didn’t correct her. Once I was dressed, she led me out to the desk, and Sean fell into step behind me, his hand on my back. River was behind the counter, and he smiled as we drew level.

“I’m so sorry.” I mouthed to him.

“Water under the bridge. Your man has taken care of your bill and then some.” He glanced at Sean, whose icy glare could strike a man dead. “I’ll…” He cleared his throat. “Trisha will see you in six months.”

I nodded to him, resolving to text him again to apologise. I grabbed my coat and left the shop.

“The car is this way,” Sean said.

The rain hammered down on us, but I whirled around to face him.

“Why are you so obsessed with me?” I asked, pushing hair out of my wet face.

“Because the moment I saw you, you became mine.”

“That’s like a kid saying I licked it, so it’s mine.” I threw up my hands.

“I seem to remember there was licking, too.” He wet his lips obscenely.

“You’re impossible.”

“Come on. Let’s get you home before I kill someone for looking at you for too long.”

Sean got a phone call after my disastrous laser appointment and was forced to drop me home with a promise to return. It wasn’t until the following day, when I woke plastered to his warm body, that I realised, yet again, he’d snuck into my bedroom and climbed into bed with me. The rest of the week was the same. Sean snuck into my bed after I’d fallen asleep and took me to and from uni every day. He ensured I was in the VIP room during the evenings I worked. I danced for him another three times. The dancing skirted the line between foreplay and full-on sex. My reservations over who he was fell away inside that room, and I danced just for him, enjoying his sole focus.

It was dangerously addicting, and I realised I was at risk from a different kind of danger. His actions were wearing my resolve down and blurring the lines I placed around my heart. I feared now if he grew tired of me, it might be worse than if he stayed. Was that why Mamá never got away?

“Kia has taken you off the rota for tonight. I am taking you on a date,” Sean announced, snapping me out of my thoughts as I returned to my room from the shower.

It was Friday morning, and I’d been increasingly tempted to invite him into our tiny bathroom as the week wore on, but “Aunt Flo” was visiting, which saved me from cracking. Subsequently, I was experiencing sexual frustration for the first time in my life, especially as I couldn’t just whip Bob out of my drawer with Sean in my bed.

“Where are we going?” I wondered what he would say if he knew of today’s significance.

“It’s a surprise.”

“How can I dress correctly if I don’t know where we are going?”

“I have something for you to wear.” He stood up, and his body momentarily mesmerised me.
