“Apparently, I’m not the only one. I’m sure you’ll be a big hit in tomorrow’s meeting.”

Fuck. He knows who I am.

He hit the red emergency button and a sense of panic swept through her as the car jolted to a stop. She made a point to look up to make sure there was a camera in the corner. That offered her a little reassurance that she wasn’t about to be raped, but she wouldn’t put anything past this guy.

“Here’s how the board meeting tomorrow is going to go. You’re going to suddenly develop a case of conscience and admit that it was you—not Kyle—who orchestrated the cyber-attacks so you could embezzle more money from the hospital. And that you were trying to frame both Kyle and Leo.”

Utah snorted. “You’re delusional.”

He pursed his lips, like he was contemplating what she’d said.

“Not since I started taking medication.”

“Why would I do such a thing?”

“Well, let me put it this way. It’d be a real shame if Liam wound up in the hospital next to Leo, or worse, the morgue. You never know what could happen to him or his dog when they’re out walking in the morning. It’s a dangerous world we’re living in.”

She gasped as she felt her eyes widen with realization.

“You’re the one who hurt Leo!”

Riley snorted. “Of course not. Well, not personally anyway. I’m just saying, Leo is an example of what could happen to people if you decide you don’t want to clear your conscience.”

“My conscience is just fine.”

He shook his head.

“I sure hope you have a change of heart by tomorrow…”

“So, let me get this straight… you want me to say it was me, not Kyle—and by the sound of it, you—who sabotaged the system and tried to embezzle money.”

“Now you’re getting it.”

“Sooo… why did Kyle vanish into thin air right after the attack? Pretty sure Kyle wouldn’t just disappear for no reason.” She let out another gasp and took a step further from him. “Unless you hurt Kyle, too!”

“I wouldn’t hurt my nephew, and he didn’t disappear. He’s been arrested in Florida. So”—he stepped toward her and plucked a lock of her hair from shoulder and rubbed it between his fingers—“you’re going to confess, and he’s going to be exonerated of all these terrible accusations.”

She shook her head. “And I’m just supposed to be okay with going to jail for a crime I didn’t commit?”

He dropped her strand of hair, only to pick up another. She had to fight to keep her body from shuddering at his touch. “Think of it as going away for the crime you did commit.”

“I served my sentence for that.”

“Okay, how about this. Isn’t Liam’s life worth a few years of jail time? You’ll be out before you know it, and then you two can have a real movie-worthy reunion.” He winced. “Well, maybe not, considering you lied to him and all.”

“I never lied to him.”

He sighed like she was testing his patience.

“Yes, I know that, and you know that, but that’s not what you’re going to say, so he’s not going to know that.”

“And why am I having this sudden urge to tell the truth?”

“Because you love him, of course, and you can’t stand lying to him anymore.”

Well, that’s the first lucid thing that has come out of his mouth.

He pressed the emergency button once more, and the car started again.
