He dips his head and I do the same, giving him credit for trying to be the world’s best actor. That’s one title he won’t get, because it’s mine.

Kimberly and Ryan glance at me, too, but Ryan is who I keep my eyes on so he knows not to fuck with me tonight. I know the silent message is received as he sets his shoulders back and clenches his jaw.

I didn’t want him here, especially after our last encounter. I allowed it for Luna, but seeing him adds the unfortunate reminder that he’s my competition.

I know he and Luna met days before our little encounter but I don’t know what was said. Like the asshole I am, I’ve been checking their messages but there’s been nothing. Not from him or her.

I look away from him and spot Asher and Priscilla ahead of me.

They’re both dressed in full black. The only color between them is Priscilla’s light brown hair flowing down her shoulders.

Priscilla has her arm linked with Asher’s.

He said things have been better between them since their trip, so I’m hoping for his sake they are.

He’s been handling everything at the company while I’ve been away so tonight is a good break for him too.

We meet in the middle of the hall and Priscilla smiles at me. As she doesn’t like me much, I know the smile is fake as fuck.

“Hunter,” she coos. “Congratulations on your engagement.”

“Thank you. Glad you could make it.”

“I can’t wait to meet your fiancée. Asher tells me good things about her.”

“She’s on her way so you’ll get to meet her very soon.”

“Wonderful.” She glances at Asher. “I’ll leave you boys to talk while I go and powder my nose.”

With a quick smile she unlinks her arm and saunters away from Asher.

I return my gaze to him and watch him staring after his future bride with a steely expression and suspicion in his eyes.

“What’s going on? You two seem much better,” I say when he looks back at me. “She doesn’t look like she wants to claw your eyes out and you don’t look like you want to incinerate her.”

“I think that’s what she wants me to believe. That we’re much better.”

I give him a narrowed stare. “Why?”

“She’s been overly nice to me. A little too nice. Especially since the trip.”

“Maybe she’s actually changing and trying.”

“No, it’s not that. Something is definitely up. I’m not sure what it is yet but I’ll find out. Until then, I’ll keep up appearances.”

God, there’s always some damn thing going on.

“What about you?” Asher casts a cold stare in Ryan’s direction.

“I’m keeping up appearances too.”

“So I see.” Asher nods. “You’re a better man than me, Hunter. If this were my engagement party, soldier boy wouldn’t even be allowed at the door, but I get that you’re showing him what he lost.”

I smile back at him. “Tonight is a declaration of triumph. I don’t want any of them to forget. And I?—”

My voice cuts off when I look ahead and see her—Luna.

She’s just walked in through the other entrance of the hall with Paige at her side.
