“It is.”

As expected, he and Kimberly found us a little after I introduced Luna to my parents and friends like Jericho.

It was strange watching the conversation between our parents play out and everyone acting as if life is as it used to be.

No one would ever have guessed that my father would love nothing more than to skin Dominic alive. Nor that Dominic probably wants to obliterate all of us for knowing his dirty secrets.

With the fake-as-fuck pleasantries done and dusted, Dominic took me aside to talk—another thing I expected.

We’re standing across the room near the archway leading out to the balcony, so no one can hear us.

Apart from when we signed the contracts I’ve had no reason to speak to him. I really don’t want to now but I’ll continue the show of camaraderie for those who need to believe our lies.

“How is Luna doing?” Dominic glances back at his beloved daughter who is talking happily with my mother.

My family loved Luna from the moment she opened her mouth to say hello. My mother especially liked her more and more with every second that ticked by.

“As you can see, she’s fine.”

Dominic looks back at me with furrowed brows. “Luna may look fine, but I know she’s not. She’s doing her best with the situation.”

I don’t care for what he thinks, so I give him a crude smile. “Then that is what she’s doing.”

“Doesn’t it bother you that you’ve dragged an innocent young woman into our mess?”

I simply stare back at him, wondering how he truly expects me to reply to that comment. “I do what I need to do and suggest you do the same.”

“I am, but if I had the power, you’d be the very last person I’d allow my daughter to marry.”

“And who would you have her marry? Ryan?”

Of course, soldier boy found his way to our table earlier to say hi to Luna. Thankfully, he had the good sense not to stick around for too long.

Dominic’s expression hardens and his eyes hold a gleam of determination. “She’s always loved him, so yes. Their marriage would be a given.”

I should feel nothing at all. This isn’t new news to me yet the stab of envy cuts me deep.

Pushing my feelings aside, I lean closer to him and brush invisible lint off his jacket, then I plaster a wide smile on my face to show I don’t give a fuck.

“What a shame. Anyway. It’s me who’s marrying her so you’re going to have to live with it.”

“I saw the way you looked at her and the way you kissed her. She’ll never love you, Hunter Le Blanche.”

Although those words slice even deeper into me, I maintain the cool mask of confidence I’ve been wearing all night. “It’s a good thing I don’t need love.”

With another smile I walk away from him and head to the bar to grab a drink.

I return to the table where my family is talking to Luna and stay there until my mother decides to whisk Luna, Autumn and Priscilla away to introduce them to her friends.

My father talks to us guys but my mind isn’t here. It’s lightyears away, wanting nothing more than to leave. There’s nothing I hate more than to be somewhere I don’t want to be.

Well over an hour passes before my mother returns with Autumn and Priscilla, but Luna isn’t with them. On seeing that, I straighten.

“Where’s Luna?” I ask my mother.

“She went off with her friend Ryan. He said he had something to show her.”

Poor Mom, she’s none the wiser about Ryan and Luna’s puppy love so she really did believe him when he introduced himself as the childhood friend.
