I’m not worried. He’ll bring me back a plate of bacon, scrambled eggs, and her famous French toast croissant. I shouldn’t have the carbs, but I work out hard so I can eat what I want.

Chapter four

Alexis

My mouth feels as rough as sandpaper and dry as a cotton ball. I try to open it, but it feels like my tongue is super glued to the roof. I go to sit up but fall backward, right back onto something soft, which is definitely not my bed. My eyes flutter open and the room spins like I’m on the tilt-a-whirl at the fair. I cover my mouth with my hand, fighting back the urge to vomit.

What the fuck did I do last night?

It hits me like a battering ram—my drinking spree with Taira. Regret comes rushing in, knowing I have to work today. Why did I drink like that? I never do that when I know I’m going to be on shift.

When there’s a pounding on my door, I jump and grab my head, wincing. The thumping behind my eyes makes me nauseous. Who the hell is at my door this early? I stand up and sway, almost falling over, before stumbling to the door. I grab the handle and jerk it open, not checking the peephole. I just want the incessant beating to stop. When I see who’s on the other side, I regret it instantly.

“What in the world happened to you, Alexis?” He sniffs the air, his nose scrunching. “You smell like a fucking brewery.”

“What do you want, Lionel?”

He goes to squeeze through the small opening between me and the doorjamb, but I step into his path, preventing him from doing so.

“Not your concern what I smell like or do anymore. Now, why are you here?” I bark at him, my voice short and curt. He may have seen me cry and got the weak me yesterday when I ran, but I was in shock. I’m not now.

Even though the betrayal of catching him with my so-called best friend is fresh, he’ll never get the honor of me breaking down in front of him again.

“Come on, Alexis, you’re making a fucking big deal over nothing. It was just sex. Something you refuse to give me until we’re married. I’m a man, for God’s sake, and I have needs.” The cocky bastard is actually serious. He believes every stupid ass word he’s saying.

I stand there in shock, still reeling from how he’s trying to rationalize what happened. I take a moment to really look at him. He’s okay looking, not ugly, but not a movie star either. He has short black hair, styled to perfection with gel, a sharp jawline, and a pointed nose. His build is average since he works hard to keep in shape.

When I really think about it, he’s not the type I normally go for. He’s too prim and proper, and honestly, more of Courtney’s type.

“You know what the sad part of it all is, Lionel?” I give him a moment to answer, but he just glares at me. “It’s not that you got caught. It’s that I was stupid enough to be coming to your place to actually have sex with you. Good thing I found out you’re a sleaze-bag before marrying you.”

“So you came to your senses. It’s all good then. We can go back to what we were and I can cut Courtney loose now that you’re going to be handling my needs like a proper fiancé.” He reaches into his pocket, pulling out my engagement ring, holding it out to me.

“Keep it. Matter of fact, why don’t you give it to Courtney? You two are perfect for each other, no better than the scum on the bottom of my shoes.” I go to shut the door, but he takes hold of it with his hand, preventing me from doing so.

“Stop being stupid, Alexis. You’re mine and you know it. Now put this damn ring back on your finger. You need to stop acting like a child. We can go into your room and you can finally ride my cock like I know you’ve been dying to do.” He runs his thumb across his lip as he looks at me, smirking.

Does he really think he can win me over like that?

He leans in to kiss me, and before I think twice about it, I knee him right in the crotch. He doubles over and I take that moment to slam the door in his face and lock it.

My body is physically shaking in anger. How did I not see how he truly was? The vile person he is? I’m so glad I found out now before we were married, or even worse, I was pregnant with his child.

I stumble back over to the couch as I listen to him pound on the door, shouting vulgarities. My neighbors are going to hate me. Just what I need—a noise complaint. He finally gives up when I don’t come back and open the door and the noise stops, except the pounding in my head.

Looking down, I see I’m still in my clothes from last night. I glance up and catch sight of the coffee table with my laptop sitting there, the screen black. How did it end up in here when it was in my bedroom where I usually keep it?

Flashes of Taira and me on it last night hit me. Of her convincing me it would be an amazing screw you to go sign up for this charity key party where I can lose my virginity to some random person I’ll never see again.

I open it and hit the power button as I take a deep breath. For the love of all that’s holy, I pray we got so drunk that we gave up on filling it out.

When it comes to life, the screen saver of Lionel and me at the beach, embraced in each other’s arms and locked in a passionate kiss, makes me tear up. It was taken right after he proposed and I said yes. Memories of a time when Lionel Newton firmly immersed me in a world of delusion. I will not cry for him. Reaching up, I swipe the tear that escaped off my cheek and shake myself free from my pity party.

Taira saved the link to the site, I remember that. I find it and click on it, but nothing gives me any clue if I did or didn’t fill out the application. I pray I didn’t. The idea of having sex with a random stranger, and losing my virginity to him, has my stomach twisted up in a knot.

Taking a deep breath, I close out of the site and open my email. My heart pounds against my ribcage when I see an email from Club Ecstasy. I click it open to see it’s a confirmation of my application and a notification that, if selected, I would be contacted with the next step.

Fuck me!
