Closing the laptop, I sit it on the couch beside me and rush to the front door, snatching my keys off the bookshelf beside it. I’m going to kill Taira.

She just lives three apartments down, so it doesn’t take me long to get there. The sound of slamming my door still echoes in the hall as I pound on hers with my fist, not caring who comes out and complains about the noise.

“Hold your fucking horses! Goddammit!” she screams, and I can hear something crashing to the floor.

The clacking sound of her unlocking the door resonates into the hallway before it flies open, exposing a very disheveled Taira. She’s half-dressed, only wearing her bra and panties, and her hair is sticking out and knotted as if she tossed and turned all night.

“Alex! What the fuck are you doing here?” She turns and begins walking to her living room, her hand reaching down and rubbing her hip. Guess the noise I heard was her crashing into something.

She flops down on the couch, pulling a pillow over her eyes to shield them from the light. “Why did we fucking drink so much?” she mumbles.

I shut the door and make my way over to her, sitting in the chair beside the couch. It’s been a while since I’ve been in her apartment because we’re normally in mine, and she’s redecorated. The once-barren apartment is now full of furniture and there are actual pictures on the wall. Most of them across from where I’m sitting are of the two of us, doing various things or at parties. The other wall is full of pictures of her family. I’m envious that I didn’t have more time with my parents and my brother. Just knowing that there’ll never be any more pictures of us together breaks my heart.

“That’s not the only thing we did, T.” I cross my arms as I glare at her. I love the girl, but she always gets me to do stupid shit.

She lifts the pillow off her face and stares at me, waiting for me to finish. Is she still so drunk that she doesn’t remember?

“Alex, please, it’s too fucking early in the morning for me to be playing guessing games. My head is pounding, my vision is blurry, and to top it off, I ran into the fucking chair and fell over it. So, forgive me, but my brain is on strike. Just tell me whatever it is I’m supposed to remember.”

Guess I just need to rip the bandaid off. “Apparently, after you showed me the site to that party, we filled out the application for me to lose my virginity there.”

She pops up, nearly falling off the couch, the pillow that once covered her face landing on the floor.

“No fucking way! Did you get in? No. It’s too soon, I mean shit. Fuck yeah, my bestie going to lose it to a hot daddy.” Her pounding head is now long forgotten as she’s dancing around, singing some stupid-ass made-up song about dicks and pussies.

“Taira, stop. In a drunken stupor we signed me up for a—let's call a spade a spade—a damn sex party to lose my virginity and get back at the two people who fucked me over. What if they pick me? What should I do? Should I just message them now and tell them it was a mistake?” My body crumbles, sinking deeper into the cushions.

“It was most definitely not a mistake, Alex. It’s kismet. All the stars aligned in the right position for you to catch that lying snake of a fiancé and whore cheating on you, then running into me, which gave me the perfect opportunity to show you the site. When they tell you that you’re accepted, you’re going to say yes. I’m going to help you get dressed and then you’re going to lose your virginity to a man that’s going to play your body like a world-class violinist. Then once it’s all over, you and I are going on that honeymoon of yours and having the time of our lives.”

She sits down on the arm of the chair, wrapping her arm around my shoulder, giving me the comfort I need.

Honeymoon!

I’d completely forgotten about it. But Lionel was in charge of that. I know where he planned on taking us because I accidentally saw the reservation. All I need to do is call and change it to my name if he hasn’t canceled it yet. No, that’s a disaster waiting to happen.

“We can’t go on the honeymoon he planned, but we can do a girls’ trip,” I mumble, not realizing I say it out loud until it’s too late.

“Fuck yeah. Where should we go?” She beams happily as she starts rattling off places.

I let her ramble. Maybe she’s right. I need to get over Lionel, and this party may be a good thing. But hell, it’s a long shot that I’ll even get chosen.

I don’t have time to worry about it. I need to get to the firehouse for my shift. Fuck, this is going to be a long ass day with a hangover.

“I need to go to work, Taira. I’ll talk to you later. Take your cranky ass back to bed.”

She gives me a thumbs up as she lies back down on the couch and pulls the blanket over her head. I’ve not even made it to the door before I hear her faint snores.

Chapter five

Alexis

It’s been a week, and my anxiety over that fucking application has finally calmed down. When I didn’t get a reply after two days, I was confident they overlooked the pitiful twenty-four-year-old virgin.

I’m so glad I dodged that bullet.

“Coming out to the bar with us tonight, Alex?” Jones asks from the back of the rig, where he’s finishing buffing.

“Where are you going?”
