If he isn’t setting fires anymore, could I move past what he’s done in the past?

My head is a mess with all the questions, doubts, and what-ifs.

Chapter twenty-eight

Alexis

It’s been two days since the coffee shop and I still haven’t mentioned any of my suspicions to Captain Olsson. Not only that, but I haven’t heard from Donovan or Dimitri and it’s been hell.

Guess we were truly doomed before we even got a chance to begin.

I’ve been going through the motions at work, making sure to be attentive when on call, but my brain is a scattered mess any other time.

All I can do is replay everything that Dimitri and Donovan shared with me. While I can’t understand how the fire helped to calm his anxiety or whatever was inside of him, I can empathize with the need to cope with trauma. Hell, I did by becoming a firefighter. Being able to save people helped ease the loss of my family.

Then something finally clicks in my replay of the events of the conversation that day.

Lionel.

Dimitri had his lighter up until they ran into him at the gym. His threat to make them pay.

Slowly, the pieces of the puzzle begin to fit into place. I’m still not sure if I can get past knowing Dimitri and the arsonist are one and the same, but I do believe he may be innocent and I can’t have him possibly have a lifetime in jail for the deaths of those caught in this last fire.

I need to talk to Dimitri and Donovan. Pulling my phone from my pocket, I move over to a secluded corner pf the firehouse and message them.

Me: I really need to talk to the two of you.

I wait, but nothing. The message switches to read but still no response.

They fucking hate me.

Me: Please I think you might be right about being set up. I need to talk to you.

Me: I know you must hate me. I should have believed you, but it was a lot to take in.

Still nothing. Knowing I can’t make them talk to me, I send one final message. With, or without their help, I will find out if Lionel set Dimitri up and then I’ll make him pay for the lives he took.

Me: Please meet me at my place at 6

I hope they show up, but if they don’t, I’m still coming up with a plan.

“Why are you hiding over here?” Antoine’s familiar voice asks as he walks past me.

“Just making a call. Need some help?” I notice he’s struggling to carry some boxes. Sliding my phone in my pocket, I take one of them off the top and follow him to the storage room.

“Thanks. I thought I was going to be able to make it, but realized about halfway I miscalculated.”

“It’s fine.”

Since I just have one box, I reposition my hold on it so I can open the door and step inside, placing it on a free spot on a shelf. Antoine squats, lowering the boxes to the floor, then wipes the beads of sweat off his forehead.

“Alexis, are you sure you’re okay? You’ve been distracted since seeing your ex in the store that day. I really think you should report his contact to the police and let them decide if it was intentional or just a mistake.”

If he only knew what was really going on. It’s not Lionel, although I’m beginning to believe he was there on purpose. All those moments I’ve had where I thought someone was watching me and brushed it off may have actually been him.

How did I never see this psychotic version of him when we were dating?

“Alex! Earth to Alex!” Antoine waves his hand in front of my face.
