What the fuck happened?

“It’s me, baby, you’re safe. How could you do this on your own? Thank god Taira had some common sense and filled us in. We’ve been watching from her apartment and as soon as he had his hands on you, we came running.” Dimitri’s sweet, caring voice envelops me.

Looking over, I see Lionel’s limp body on the floor and I begin to cry.

“He’s not dead, baby, just out cold. Donovan got him good. He’s going to tie him up and then call the cops. Taira’s doing some magic with the tape, so we can hand it over to them.”

It’s then I see the rope in Donovan’s hand as he skillfully ties him up like a hog. Once he’s secure, he slaps him across the face, jolting Lionel awake.

“Nice of you to join us, brother.”

“Let me go, asshole, and I’m not your brother. I’m pressing charges on all of you for assault. Do you know who I am? Who my father is? You’ll rot in jail for this,” Lionel barks, but Donovan just laughs.

“Oh, I know exactly who you are, brother. And since he’s my father, I do know who he is and just how wealthy he is. In fact, dear ol’ daddy is constantly trying to buy my love. Does he do that for you? It doesnae matter. I don’t want his money, his name, or for him to be my father. What I want is for you to rot in hell for what you did to my lass, my best friend, and all those poor souls you killed in your vendetta to ruin our lives.”

“I’ll never see a day in jail. You have no proof, and my father will get rid of it if you do.”

Fuck, I didn’t think of that.

“I dinnae think Hanson will be helping you, not after the visit I had with him this morning. If he wants all his dirty little secrets to stay hidden from his wife, he’ll make sure you pay for what you did. I even made sure he knew that if you got off or attempted to mess with any of us again, the Kuznetsov family would be stepping in to handle the situation. He seems to be pretty scared of them. As for proof, my stunning girlfriend has your confession recorded and it will be pretty damning in court.” Donovan finishes with Lionel, then comes over to me, kneeling beside me as he looks at the fingerprint marks on my neck.

“You are so stubborn, Alexis. Dimitri and I had a plan, one we wanted to keep you out of. All you had to do was be patient.” He kisses me lightly on my lips.

“Patience has never been a strong point of mine.” I laugh, fighting back the pain.

I sigh. It’s finally over.

Epilogue

Alexis

Four months later

The trial ended today and Lionel received four life sentences with no chance of parole. The tape was damning and fuck, Taira did an amazing job of piecing all the parts together, leaving out anything that didn’t need to be there. The best part is Dimitri was in no way a suspect. The only part I hate is he never got the lighter back, but he brushed it off. Apparently, I was his new lighter.

Donovan’s father sat on the other side of the courtroom from us, and I kept catching his gaze on Donovan. I have a feeling he regrets not being part of his life. But he made his bed, and he has to lie in it now.

As we walk out of the courthouse, the guys each take a hand and we descend the steps, ready to begin our lives with this weight lifted. They’re extra happy today and both of them are excited about going back to my apartment.

I’ve questioned them a couple of times when they would disappear to work on some secret project, but they would never give me answers. But we promised no more secrets between each other, so I brushed it off and didn’t worry about it.

All this with Lionel proved that we needed to be upfront about everything. That way, an outside party could never use it against us.

“We have a surprise for you,” Dimitri whispers in my ear as we step inside the elevator.

“What?”

“Nah, it’s not a tell you surprise. It’s a show you one,” Donovan whispers in the other.

We reach my floor and the elevator doors slide open. When we step off, they lead me to my apartment. It almost feels like ours, since they’ve been spending the majority of their nights here. But my little one bedroom is becoming cramped and we need to upgrade. I’m just not sure how to bring up the topic to the guys. At one point, they wanted to move in together, but then shit hit the fan and we never talked about it again.

They lead me through the door and sit me down on the couch. Their laptop is on the coffee table, open, with a black screen. They each take a seat beside me and grab a hand.

“Alex, we’ve both loved you from the moment we met you. When you saved me and when you ran into Donovan at the grocery store. You’re our everything and all we ever want in life.” Dimitri starts and tears begin to well in my eyes.

“We had a house all picked, but we wanted to show you before we put an offer down. Then things went a little sideways, and we made the offer without you. Over the last few months, we’ve been remodeling it and it’s finally ready,” Donovan continues.

He reaches forward, tapping the key on the laptop, bringing it to life. There on the screen is the most beautiful farmhouse I’ve ever seen.
