He whimpers. “To myself.”

I extract my phone. “What’s its location?”

Lafayette rattles off an address that I enter in my maps app. I forward it to Gil, asking him to delegate the job of retrieving Emberly’s paintings to whichever of our men is closest.

The car stops at a warehouse, where it’s time to change vehicles to avoid getting caught up by any more Moirai assassins.

We’re still holding four of their operatives, and that doesn’t include Rosalind. The man I called doesn’t seem to give a shit about them, so I’ve got Cesare persuading our hostages to release their locations. If the Moirai won’t call off the hit, they can die.

Emberly and I enter the second car, which has a partition to give us privacy. I don’t bother to tell her that one of my men will keep Lafayette in the warehouse for as long as it takes to extract him of everything he has of value. I certainly don’t inform her I plan on having him drowned in a canal.

What I’m about to do is risky, but Emberly is already convinced of my good intentions. If it fails, I can always draw her back with sex. It worked last time.

“Our bargain is complete.” I reach into my inside pocket and pull out a thick envelope containing a passport, driver’s license, and fake utility bills. “Here’s the ID you asked for, and the twenty-five grand is in your bank account.”

“I don’t want it,” she says.

I laugh. “First, you’re short-changing yourself on the sale of your painting and now you’re refusing money? Get real, sweetheart.”

“Not the twenty-five thousand.” She slides her fingers into mine.

“Then what?”

“I don’t need that fake ID.”

My brows pull together. “What does that mean?”

“I want to stay… If you’ll have me?”

Warmth fills my heart, and my lips curl into a self-congratulatory smile. With no warrant out for her arrest, she doesn’t need to run.

I won’t lose Emberly.

Jim Callahan’s insane attempts to capture her means she doesn’t even feel safe enough to leave. And the prospect of becoming a professional artist gives her an incentive to remain under my roof.

Everything has fallen into place with perfect precision.

I couldn’t have planned this any better.

Emberly can stay with me for a lifetime. I no longer want to cut it short. It’s ludicrous that I ever wanted her dead. Instead, I plan on doing everything in my power to make sure she never leaves.

“Of course, baby. Stay as long as you?—”

Before I can even finish that sentence, her lips crash on mine in a searing kiss.

THIRTY-SEVEN

EMBERLY

I can’t control my desire. My blood is still hot from the thrill of beating the shit out of that scammer, and it’s all thanks to Roman. He’s just so perfect. He’s handsome, sexy, protective, generous—everything I’ve ever wanted. He destroys my enemies, makes dreams come true, and knows exactly how to melt my heart.

Straddling his lap, I join our lips in a kiss I never want to break. Roman is mine for as long as he wants me, and even beyond. I want him to know I have no plans on ever leaving a man who satisfies me so completely.

He makes a deep moan that goes straight to my pussy and stokes the flames of my arousal.

“Emberly,” he murmurs into my mouth. “Keep going like that, and you’ll ruin the second surprise.”

I grab his wrists, trying to pin him down, but he grabs my ass and chuckles. “I don’t want it unless it’s you naked with a condom wrapped around your dick.”
