“You’re a terrible father. She’s good and she loves you so much. I hate you,” Maja shouted, tears streaming down her cheeks as she ran out of the room.

“Maja,” I called out in vain.

Something wasn’t adding up here. If Laura was planning to go live on air to talk about our relationship, then she knew it would damage my reputation if she decided to tell the world how we’d met. Fuck, I really hoped this wasn’t the case.

I felt terrible, and I fucking missed her like crazy. My heart beat only for her, but none of this mattered anymore; Laura had shattered me. After meeting Jeremy, I went to see Rupert, hoping that he’d know something, but he could hardly believe it himself. I still needed to have a chat with James.

“I’m sorry, man, but I've no idea what is going on. Veronica hasn’t said anything. Let me call her,” Rupert said. But he couldn’t get hold of her either.

It was close to seven, and the programme was going to air in about an hour. I took out my phone and scrolled until I got to her name. I hesitated, but I had to talk her out of doing that goddamn interview. She knew exactly what would happen if the news about me using an escort came out. I would be totally crushed. If Laura needed money, then she should have asked me and I would have happily given it to her, but the way she was going about it just didn’t make sense.

I didn’t want to beg, but she couldn’t do that to Maja, to herself and to me.

I got up and dialled the number. She was probably already in the studio, getting ready for her big moment.

“Hello,” she answered.

When I heard her voice, I gripped my phone tighter.

“Laura, don’t do this,” I said in a quivering voice. Fuck, I didn’t realise that this was going to be so difficult.

There was silence on the other end of the phone, and so many unspoken words passed between us. I listened to her uneven breaths while my heart was spiking, thumping. I wanted to know what she was thinking.

“Spencer, it’s not that simple. I don’t have a choice, please, I need to go.”

She broke me again, thrusting a knife into my chest.

Fuck, that hurt.

I fucking loved her.

“If you go through with this, my career will be over and you will destroy us, Laura. Maja will suffer because of you, and I won’t allow you to see her ever again.” I clenched my fist. “It won’t be long before the press will put two and two together—me using escorts and the fact that Veronica is your roommate.”

“You don’t get it, there's no us, there never has been. We were never going to make it from the start. The world was against us,” she said.

And she was crying. I could hear it in her voice, but I didn’t get it.

“Laura … I couldn’t believe that I was good enough for you, but now I do, please—”

“Don’t, Spencer, don’t do this. I've to go, I … Goodbye,” she said, and then the line went dead.

I squeezed my phone, wanting to destroy it like Laura had destroyed us. Just then, a knock sounded on my door.

I took a few deep breaths, trying to calm myself down. I was so disappointed, so fucking angry. I had lost everything because the woman I loved chose fame and money over all else. Fuck, and all this time, I’d thought she was different.

I opened the door, staring at my bodyguard, Jason.

“Sir, your brother, James, is here to see you,” he announced.

I exhaled with relief, suddenly glad James was here.

“Yeah, let him in.” I stood and buttoned up my suit jacket. I hoped James had something that would help me unwind this nonsense, otherwise I would have to prepare myself for the shitstorm that would hit tomorrow morning after Laura’s interview aired.

Jason nodded and James walked in, and right behind him there was another tall man, carrying a briefcase. He was dressed in a black cardigan and black trousers. My eyes widened with shock, because I was not expecting him here at all.

“Dexter Tyndall, what a fucking surprise. It’s been years, man.” I embraced him in a hug, suddenly remembering everything from our shared past.. That fucker was handsome, and he knew it. We’d studied law together in Edinburgh but hadn’t seen each other in at least seven years. “What are you doing here?”

“I called him while I was looking into Samantha, and it turns out that Dexter’s wife, Sasha, knows Samantha,” James said with his usual calm demeanour.
