“Uh, no. Is he sexy? I don’t know if he’s sexy. Do you think he’s sexy?”

The babbling wasn’t exactly helping his case but he didn’t know how to stop it.

“Do you think he’s sexy?” Texas shot back at him.

Ace threw his hands up. Jesus. Tex was no fucking help.

“Let me ask you this. Are you straight?”

“Uh.” Ace cleared his throat. Was it getting hot in here? “Yeah.”

“Right. That’s a no, then.”

“What?” he exclaimed.

“You hesitated.”

“Because you asked me a stupid question,” Ace said.

Why the fuck was Tex grinning at him?

“Oh, I can’t wait to see this unfold,” Texas said, rubbing his hands together.

Ace dropped his head back with a loud groan. Tex wasn’t any help. Having to ask once was embarrassing enough and now he would have to ask someone else, too.

Kody

He stared at his phone. He didn’t know what to do or how to answer that text. He wasn’t even sure he wanted to. Did he have to?

“What’s wrong?”

He looked up to see his oldest sister standing in front of him with a worried look on her face. She had her toddler in one arm and a pitcher of iced tea in the other. He reached up to take Miley from her and sat her on his lap. She was busy eating a popsicle, so he looked up at Katelynn and said, “Amanda texted. She and Ruben are coming over. So, I guess I’m leaving.”

“Why the fuck do you have to leave?” Katelynn asked, a note of frustration in her voice.

“Hey,” Kody exclaimed, putting his hands over Miley’s ears. “No swearing.”

Katelynn gave him a deadpan look and said, “She’s gonna learn anyway. Might as well teach her the good stuff.”

He shook his head with a low chuckle and found himself with popsicle all over his face.

“Unce, ice cream,” Miley said, smiling at him while she tried to share her popsicle with his nose.

“You wanna share with me? That’s so sweet of you. Thank you.”

Once there was no more ice cream and Katelynn had handed him enough vet wipes to wipe off Miley’s hands and mouth along with his whole face, he put Miley down so she could go play with her toys.

When Katelynn sat down on the couch next to him, she gave him a look he was all too familiar with. He was not getting out of this conversation.

“Why are you always leaving? You know you can ask him to not come over, right?”

Ruben was close with their whole family. Hell, they’d known each other their whole lives. They’d gone from best friends to boyfriends in high school. He’d always been there. Until he wasn’t. Ruben had wanted more from life and had decided that this ‘more’ didn’t include Kody. He’d thought they were headed for marriage. Maybe kids. He couldn’t have been more wrong.

The worst part was that Ruben hadn’t cheated. He hadn’t done anything except break up with him which was why he felt like he couldn’t be mad at him. Ruben had stopped loving him and he’d told him. He couldn’t really ask for more than that.

It fucking sucked, though.

He’d cried so much he’d ended up going almost numb. He hadn’t been himself for months. He hadn’t lived. He’d just survived. Barely.
