Cora had gotten him through the worst of it while Ruben and his whole family had pretty much acted like everything was fine. Ruben was like a son and brother to them, so he was constantly over at their houses, and he was always invited to birthdays and other celebrations. It fucking sucked because he couldn’t look at Ruben without his heart breaking a little more. He didn’t want to be reminded that he hadn’t been enough for him every time he went to see his family. It was just too much.

Only Katelynn seemed able to see both sides.

“He’s not going to stay away and if any of them finds out I asked him to, they’d be pissed at me.”

Katelynn pressed her lips together.

“I don’t want to get on anyone’s bad side,” he said.

“So, instead you’re just walking on eggshells and missing out on birthdays and Christmases?”

Yeah. He’d told everyone he’d gotten shifts on Christmas and new year’s but really he’d almost begged his captain for those days. From the look his sister was leveling him with, she’d guessed as much.

He didn’t answer. Mostly because what could he answer?

He got up and said, “Tell the others I said hi.”

“Kody?”

He got the hell out of there before she could get another word out.

Cora was right. He needed to get over Ruben. One way or another, though he knew exactly what and who Cora’s way entailed, and a bad boy was exactly what he needed right then.

He walked through the door to his home and the smell of whatever heavenly food his mom was cooking hit him right away.

“Hi, mom,” he yelled and bent down to pull off his boots.

“Hi, honey.”

He walked into the kitchen, smiling when he found his mom at the stove. She turned and looked up at him with a big smile. He placed a kiss on her cheek, making sure not to get his dirty clothes too close to her or the food.

“Dinner’s ready in fifteen,” she said.

“Great. I’mma go shower.”

“Please do,” she said, her eyes crinkling when she grinned at him.

He chuckled and took off toward the stairs. He headed up and stopped by his room to grab some clean clothes and on the way to the bathroom, he grabbed a towel from the hallway closet.

He showered and tried very hard not to think about his conversation with Tex, but his thoughts kept coming back to Kody and that fussy feeling in his chest. The not-so-fussy feeling further down south had him cursing and telling his dick to calm the fuck down. The fact that he even had to do that was… disturbing? Confusing? He wasn’t really sure.

After he dried off and got dressed, he made his way downstairs and when he stepped into the kitchen he found his mom pouring the chili con carne she’d made into a dish. He grabbed a dishtowel and picked up the dish and carried it to the dining table.

She was watching him with that mom-look of knowing something was up the whole time they ate and the second they finished, he couldn’t hold back his question any longer.

“How do you know if you’re gay or straight? Or whatever?”

She raised a brow at him.

“Isn’t it a bit late to be wondering about that, honey?”

He shrugged, glancing down at the hands he was wringing in his lap.

“Well. You figure it out by experimenting.”

He snapped his head up. “What?”
