CHAPTER NINE

Ace

THIS MISSION was his most important to date. He’d planned it with military precision. His soldiers were ready. They were well-trained and prepared to do what was necessary. He gave the signal and watched as the first soldier took his place, then the second. He waited for them all to get into position, their guns at the ready, and then he peeked around the corner of the building.

Their targets were unaware of their presence, too busy talking to each other. This was the right time to strike.

“Now,” he yelled, and they all descended on Steel and Kai, water guns pumped to the max.

The kids quickly surrounded them and went hard at them with the water. Ace was laughing his ass off at Steel who threw his hands up in surrender while Kai tried to protect him from all sides at once.

By the time they ran out of water, Steel and Kai were drenched and he and the kids were all laughing.

Kai ran a hand over his face and shook the water off, then gave Ace a deadly look and said, “I’ll kill you.”

“What was that?” Steel asked, brow cocked at Kai who whirled around to face him. Kai wrapped his arms around the back of Steel's neck and drawled, “Nothing, dear.”

“He said he’d kill Ace,” Evan yelled which set off a round of giggling among the smaller kids.

“In that case,” Steel said and looked over Kai’s head to stare straight at Ace. “Go right ahead.”

Kai turned, his smile chilling, and then one of the kids handed him a water gun.

Oh fuck.

His gun was empty, so he threw it at Kai before turning on his heels. He took off running like his life depended on it. For all he knew, it did. Kai could kill him with a water gun.He didn’t need a gun to kill him at all.

He headed for the woods but didn’t make it far before he tripped. He fell on his face, cursing when the gravel dug into his skin, and then the water pelted down on him, making him screech. It was ice-fucking-cold, too. Had the bastard put ice cubes in the gun? What the fuck?

“Do I need to add maiming to our no-kill rule?”

The water ceased, so Ace chanced rolling over and sitting up. He found Ares and Kaz standing on one side of him, Kai on the other.

“I got permission,” Kai said with a smug grin. “If you disagree with Steel’s decision, you should take it up with him. And the kids. They all seem to be enjoying the show.”

“Hey,” Ace exclaimed. “That’s no fair.”

The kids were indeed standing around, laughing their asses off. Bunch of little buggers.

Ares’ sigh was drowned out by Kaz asking, “Are we using Ace for target practice?”

Kai’s smirk had Ace cursing under his breath.

Kai handed his water gun to Kaz and said, “Have at it.”

“Mother?”

Ace was up and running again, arms waving in the air as he screamed to get the kids laughing again. He was gonna be black and blue by the end of the day, but seeing those kids have fun was well worth it. Besides, he had someone to kiss his boo-boos now. Someone other than his mother, that was.

Kody

“I’m gonna need you to explain that slower,” he said, looking at Ace with disbelief.

Ace sighed. “I got assassinated by water gun, first by an ex-assassin, then by a group of eight- to twelve-year-olds. All day.”

“Yeah, no, I got the last part. The ex-assassin part, not so much.”

“Oh. Well, Kai used to be an assassin. Now he’s working with the kids at the shelter.”
