“I’m sorry, he’s working with kids? Why would you let an assassin anywhere near kids?”

Was he losing his mind? Or was Ace really not making any sense? Ace looked like he thought he was making sense. Like this was a normal topic of conversation.

“Ex-assassin.”

“I… can’t even.”

What the hell had he gotten himself into?

“I’m sorry,” Ace said and dropped down on the couch with a big sigh.

He didn’t like how defeated Ace looked, so he stepped in front of him and pried the man’s hands away from his face.

“What’s going on right now?” he asked after getting down on his knees, hands covering Ace’s.

“I’m sorry. I know you said you didn’t want anything serious but…” Ace’s brows snapped together. “How is it my fault that you’re so easy to fall in love with?”

Kody’s heart did a flip in his chest that left him unable to breathe.

“I mean, I didn’t even know I could like guys and there you go being so fucking perfect and all. How was I supposed to resist that?” Ace narrowed his eyes at Kody. “Why are you smiling? This is serious.”

“I know,” Kody said, said smile only getting bigger the more Ace glowered at him.

Ace pulled his hands out from under Kody’s and crossed his arms. Kody wasn’t having that, so he stood and climbed into Ace’s lap. Ace’s arms went from crossed to wrapping around Kody in an instant.

He cupped Ace’s face in his hands and looked into his eyes as he said, “You realize you just told me you’re in love with me, right?”

Ace’s oh-shit face was the most adorable thing he’d ever seen.

Bringing Ace home to meet his parents had been a lot more fun than he’d expected. Ace and his father had gotten on like a house on fire while his mom had doted on both of them. Ace hadn’t been trying to win favor with them, either, he just had by being his lovable self.

“I-I… But y-you said?”

He cut Ace’s stammering mess off saying, “Forget what I said. I wouldn’t have agreed to be your boyfriend if I didn’t want serious with you.”

Ace snapped his mouth shut, blinking rapidly at Kody.

“You’re easy to fall in love with, too.”

He slid his hands into Ace’s hair and lowered his head.

“But,” Ace said, making Kody pull back. “What about the club and… you know?”

Kody shook his head. “Doesn’t matter.”

“It does, though. I’ve seen too many relationships crash and burn because one wasn’t in the life and didn’t understand or like it.”

Kody smiled wryly at Ace.

“Good thing I’m a firefighter, then. I’m not sure you’re aware but I do know how to put out a fire.”

Ace rolled his eyes, then huffed out a laugh despite himself.

“We’ll be just fine, Ace.”

“You say that now.”

“Yes, I’m saying it now because, like you said, if we can handle each other’s bad shit now, then we sure as hell can handle anything that comes our way in the future. Do I understand the assassin thing? No. Especially around kids. But, I don’t see how that has anything to do with our relationship or me being in love with you.”
