“Why do you wound me so, mother?” Ace asked, hand over his heart as he pretended to collapse in his chair.

“So dramatic,” Kody said under his breath.

Ace sat up and snapped his head toward Kody. “You love it.”

Kody rolled his eyes, then said, “No. I just love you.”

He leaned in for a kiss and Kody met him halfway. Mom and Luna were apparently competing for who could do the best impression of someone puking because they both gagged and made each other laugh.

A buzzing in his pocket had him digging out his phone and looking down at it, a lump formed in his throat.

“It’s Chris,” he said, voice low.

This was it. He would either be free, or he’d be going away forever. He knew the club’s lawyer Milo had said they still had a strong case if they decided to charge him with murder, but he wasn’t so optimistic.

A hand slid into his, fingers threading together.

He looked up into Kody’s eyes. He clung to the hope he saw in them and took a deep breath, then pressed the answer button and put the phone on speaker.

“Hey,” he said, voice a bit shaky.

“Are you sitting down?” Chris asked, making Ace’s heart lurch in his chest.

“We are,” Kody answered for him.

“Then get up and start jumping,” Chris said.

“What?”

“The case is closed and they’re not charging you for anything.”

He sat back, the hand he was holding the phone with dropping to the table.

“Babe,” Kody said, hands on Ace’s cheeks. “You’re free. We’re free.”

“We’re free?”

“Well, you’re not free of me, but you’re not going to jail,” Kody said with a teasing gleam in his brown eyes.

“I never want to be free of you.”

“Good. Because you couldn’t get rid of me even if you tried,” Kody said.

“Excuse me,” Mom said. “What charges?”

“Oh, fuck,” he muttered, making Kody laugh.

He was gonna have a hell of a time explaining and then begging for his mom’s forgiveness for not telling her about it before. At least he had Kody and Luna with him. Then she couldn’t murder him. Right?

CHAPTER TWENTY

Kody

CORA WAS bent over laughing hysterically. He glared at her, but it did nothing to stop her. She tried to speak as she pointed at him but all that came out was more laughter.

“Are you done?”

Cora nodded and heaved for breath.
