“I swear I’m not his fiancée. I don’t even know why he would pull that card or what he was thinking.”

“These billion-dollar men.” She sighed deeply again. “I swear they’re all cut from the same cloth.”

“What do you mean?”

“Let’s just say he’s taking a page out of your father’s book. He did something very similar to me before we got back together, but he didn’t go as far as lying that I was his fiancée.”

I was beyond blown away by her confession and this next-level bullshit Elias was pulling on me. It was beyond.

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you.”

“You don’t need to say sorry to me, I understand, but how will you handle this? You can’t retract the podcast. It’s already out, and if you go back on what he said, it’ll only mess up the launch of his new company. I can’t imagine what the press will label him for lying about something so serious.”

“Which is exactly why he did it.” I heard the door to the suite open and then close.

“Your father?—”

“I’ll deal with him. I gotta go.”

“Capri—”

I hung up and marched my way into the living room, instantly roaring at him, “How fucking dare you?”

Except at the last second, I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw him. He was shirtless in black gym shorts with sweat dripping down his face and chest, and it simply accentuated his chiseled, muscular physique.

He removed his iPods, arching an eyebrow as he tried to hand me a coffee. “Your skinny vanilla latte.” That was how he responded to me.

The fact that he remembered my favorite caffeine kick wasn’t lost on me, but I ignored his kind gesture. I was too furious with him.

“Don’t you try this sweet shit on me, Elias Sinclair. How dare you blindside me with what you told the podcast last night? You’re a liar!”

And the son of a bitch had the brazen balls to smile, big and wide, like what I just said caused him happiness and no distress whatsoever. My blood was boiling, and it didn’t simmer down by his presence. If anything, it agitated it. He was like gasoline, and I was going to explode at any second.

“Good morning to you too, Miss Locke.”

“Oh, I’m Miss Locke now?”

“Is there a problem?”

“You bet your ass there’s a problem!”

“You don’t have to yell at me, beauty. I’m standing right in front of you.”

“You’re lucky I don’t knee you in the balls, Elias!”

“Oh, so now I’m suddenly Elias again?”

“I’m going to kill you. Is that what you want? For me to end up in hell?”

“Considering,” he exclaimed, “I’ve lived there for almost eight years. It’s the complete opposite of what I’m trying to make right again.”

“Make right again? Are you for real?” I spewed. “Do you have any idea what the press is going to do now? They’re going to dig until they get whatever dirt they can on me to sell their soulless magazines! This could ruin my career! Or did you forget that I was engaged to another man just a few weeks ago?”

He stubbornly eyed me up and down. “I covered all our bases, beauty.”

“What the hell does that even mean?”

“It means that I’m going to shower, but do you really think I’d ever let anyone talk shit about you?”
