My eyebrows pinched together, considering what he was questioning until I blurted, “I don’t know what to think.”

He winced. It was quick, but I saw it.

I felt bad. “Elias, I?—”

He interrupted. “You scheduled the photo shoot with Forbes this morning, and I don’t like being late for anything I commit to.” With one foot in front of the other, he walked past me and casually spun, adding, “The podcast is live, Capri. It has all the answers you’re riding my ass for.”

And then he just walked away, leaving me there with my jaw on the floor from his smugness.

“What in the actual fuck?” I seethed, grabbing my iPad off the coffee table to listen to all his lies.

I skimmed until I got to the parts I wanted to hear, and I didn’t think I could be more dumbfounded than when I heard Elias tell the podcast host that after I caught my cheating fiancé with his secretary, I found comfort in him. One thing led to another, and we realized that after all these years, we were still soulmates and in love with each other. He didn’t waste any time making sure I’d be his forever because he couldn’t bear to lose me again.

What really left me speechless was the fact that he was wearing his matching ring that he gave me at the airport ten years ago. I grabbed my chest, feeling as if I was having a heart attack. Only then did my phone ring, and Ava’s name appeared on the screen.

I answered, and she immediately shouted, “Bitttttch, I told you to have sex with him, not get engaged!”

“I’m not engaged,” I insisted.

“That’s not what your bossy billionaire told the world last night. I just woke up and turned on the TV, and right in front of my eyes, I learned about my best friend being engaged to her college sweetheart. Have you listened to what he said about you? That he’s always loved you. That he’s regretted every second of losing you. That if he could go back, he’d change everything and choose you, even if it meant that he wouldn’t have become the man he is. Capri, he’s calling you the love of his life and his soulmate.”

I sat there with wide eyes. I didn’t get to that part of the podcast yet, and hearing her disclose that information was almost…

Too much for me to take.

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

CAPRI

“Love is so short, forgetting is so long.” —Pablo Neruda

“Wow.”

“Wow is exactly right. What the fuck is going on?”

“I don’t even know, Ava. I’m as shocked as you are. He hasn’t said those things to me. After I kissed him?—”

“You kissed him?” she shrieked.

“I drank too much, and I made a mistake.”

Before I could say anything else, she questioned, “Did you sleep with him?”

“If by sleep, you mean I slept in his arms, then yes, I did.”

“And you’re wondering why he thinks you’re back together?”

“I have no words for this. I… I don’t know what to do or how to handle it. He’s acting like he didn’t just set my entire world on fire. If I killed him, would you help me hide his body?”

“I mean, there are worse things than being engaged to one of the most eligible bachelors in our decade.”

“You’re not helping.”

“What are you going to do?”

“I can’t say he’s lying, or I’d ruin the launch of his new company. The press would eat him alive.”

“Yeah…”
