And me, running the hell out of the ballroom.

CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

ELIAS

“If I know what love is, it is because of you.”—Hermann Hesse

As soon as I noticed she was gone, I ran after her. Thankfully, I ran into someone I knew pulling up to the event. After I explained I needed to find my fiancée, he let me use his car. Throwing it in drive before the door even shut, I tore through the parking lot and down the back road until I saw her.

Not only was I furious she ran away from me but it was ten at night and it was dark as shit, and the dress she wore was simply asking for trouble. There was no one to be seen. It was only her and me now, and I had no problem showing her how angry I was that she’d try to pull this stunt on me. As if I’d let her. She was in for a rude awakening, and I was done playing nice.

She was walking with her arms folded over her chest, her pissed-off stance still very much alive and thriving as it began to rain. This wasn’t exactly where or how I wanted to have it out with her, but she’d left me no choice. I was losing control, and that was never a good thing. She was about to feel my wrath, and I, for one, couldn’t wait.

I pulled up next to her. “Get in!” I barked.

She looked over at me, shocked I was there. “No!”

“Capri, don’t fuck with me!”

She rolled her eyes, threw her head back, and screamed, “Fuck. You!”

I snidely grinned, immediately flooring the gas and veering across the grass to block her path near the trees. Throwing it in park, I didn’t bother turning off the engine and jumped out before she even saw me coming. She pivoted around to take off in the other direction, but I was over to her in three strides.

Face-to-face.

She stepped back until she was against the vehicle.

Nowhere to go.

Mine.

All mine.

Placing my hands on each side of her head, I caged her in with my arms and spoke through clenched teeth, “You don’t run away from me?” I lashed out, looming over her smaller frame. “Ever!”

“No! That’s your job!” She shoved me, and I didn’t waver, which only made her push me again. “Get out of my damn way!”

I could see in her eyes that she was furious with me, and I couldn’t blame her. To an outsider looking in, Kyle made it seem like more was happening behind the scenes that involved Amber and I together in a way we never were.

“I hate you!” She seethed, slamming her hands on my chest. “I hate you so much right now! You’re nothing but a liar, Elias Sinclair!”

I immediately fell back, the wind knocked from my sails. She took the distraction as an opportunity to maneuver herself away from me.

“I can’t believe you did that! I can’t believe you did that to me and didn’t have the balls to tell me you planted Amber in his office? For what? For him to cheat on me?!”

I scoffed, shrugging. “Yeah, and I’d do it again.”

Her mouth dropped open. “Of course, you would! That’s who you are! You don’t think for one damn second about me! Not one! Now, leave!”

“I’m not going anywhere, and neither are you.”

Raindrops fell upon our heads, and a storm was brewing, matching our emotions and the situation we were suddenly in.

I wasn’t prepared for this.

I wasn’t prepared for her.

I didn’t give a damn.
