She walked over to me and grabbed my hands before sitting on the balls of her feet in front of me.

“You know you’re my best friend in the whole wide world.”

I nodded. “I know.”

“I think it’s time you put yourself first regardless of what it could do to other people.”

“Does that mean I get back together with him?”

She smiled. “Sweetie, you’re engaged to him, and I don’t think he has any plans of not making you his wife.”

“Yeah,” I breathed out.

“People make mistakes, and men aren’t the brightest crayons in the box when it comes to feelings. They all have the right to know that they hurt you. It won’t change your love for them or their love for you. It’s just going to make things better for you all.”

“What if it doesn’t?”

“Capri, you’re literally the apple of your parents’ eyes, and I’m almost certain you’re the favorite of their kids.”

“Ava!”

“What?” She let go of my hands. “I’m just being honest.”

“Your honesty is appreciated.”

“I know, I’m the best.”

I chuckled as the door to the bathroom opened, and my mom walked in.

“There you are, Capri.” Mom smiled, walking toward us. “Your father is talking to Elias.”

“Oh man.” My eyes went wide. “Is that why you’re in here? Are you hiding?”

She sat in the chair Ava was sitting in. “Are you?”

Ava took that opportunity to leave, and as she did, she winked at me, mouthing, “Tell her.”

Mom must have noticed, and she narrowed her curious gaze at me. “What, honey?”

“How do you know I have something to say?”

“Because I know.”

I swallowed hard again. “I think I’m in love with Elias, and I don’t think I ever stopped.”

Her loving expression was evident on her pretty face. My mom was still one of the most beautiful women I’d ever seen. I swear she got better looking with age.

“I’ve always known that, Capri.”

“Great,” I mocked, dramatically putting my hands up in the air. “So everyone knew, and no one told me. I love that for me.”

“What’s going on between you two? Is it true? Are you guys together? Because the way that man looks at you, I can’t imagine this is just a publicity stunt that you curated after he told the world you were engaged.”

“I don’t know what we are, and that’s the honest truth.”

“Alright… but all we’ve ever wanted is for you to be happy, Capri. Both of you. And if you found that with one another again, who are we to say anything about it?”

“There’s more.”
