Long silent moments later, Dylan asked, “Is she asleep?”

“I think so,” Nick replied.

I wasn’t, but I didn’t correct him.Right or wrong, I was curious to find out what they were thinking.

“We’re in over our heads, man,” Dylan drawled.“Especially you.”

“Don’t pin this all on me.I saw your face when you were balls deep inside her, man.”

“I know. But this whole thing is getting FUBAR’d beyond belief.”

“Not if we don’t let it,” Nick assured.

“Really? What happens when we have to leave?”

“You mean, what happens when we have to leaveher,” Nick corrected.

“Like I want to think about that now?”Dylan sighed.“I finally figured out how she climbed so deep inside us.”

I felt Nick turn his head as I remained silently breathing evenly.

“So, it’s not all on me, huh?”Nick asked with a hint of sarcasm in his tone.

“No, man.”

“What have you come up with Doctor Phil?”

“Don’t bust my balls just because I’m in tune with my feelings, and you’re not.I’m cautious for a reason.”

“What’s that?”

“It keeps me from getting in too deep with women like her.”

“No.It’s just mortar for your walls, asshole.”Nick chortled.

“True. You want to borrow some?I think you need it.”

“Nah, I’ll be fine.We both will.”

Though stunned by the revelation I had touched them as deeply as they had me, the tone of Nick’s voice made me wonder if any of us would be fine when this powerful connection was severed.

“We both know this isn’t going to go anywhere, right?”Dylan bit out.

“Man, why are you always so fucking negative when you can’t cover something up with a joke?”

“Do you know why you married Paige?”Dylan asked, ignoring Nick’s question.

“Yeah, because I was thinking with my dick instead of my brain.”

“True,” Dylan scoffed.“You’re in love with the idea of marriage, family, and taking care of the little woman.”

“Do I need to carry Savannah to bed, so I can lie down on the couch while you dissect my brain, Doctor?”

“Come on, Nick. How many times have you helped me see the forest for the trees?Too many to count. It’s time I do the same for you, man.”Dylan paused as Nick grunted.“I get it, I do.I know you want to settle down and have a family.Even before you married Paige and we went through our shit, I secretly hoped she’d warm up to the idea of us sharing her.But she didn’t.”

“I know, man.And I’m sorry for what it did to us.I learned a lot of lessons from that mistake. The biggest ones being, we’re no good alone and I have lousy judgment when it comes to women.”

“No, you don’t.Look at that woman in your lap. She’s perfect,” Dylan whispered.“But I’m no poster child for happily ever after. The minute things start feeling like a ball and chain, I’m asshole and elbows running the other way.You know that. But Savannah…well, she’s a whole different story. She blindsided us because she’s so fucking real. She’s so honest and pure. She’s like an oasis in the middle of the desert. We’re never going to find another like her at Genesis…or anywhere else.”
