Okay, yeah.

Now that I knew I had to open that door, I had a feeling it wasn’t going to be hard to let him inside so he could have my back, because he felt perfect standingright there.

Martha also stopped speaking, and it was clear she wanted me to answer.

“Alexis?” I guessed.

“No!” she shouted, “Jacob!”

My mouth dropped open very wide in a happy “O.”

One could say Jacob didn’t let a single blade of grass grow underthat.

Cap’s hand came to rest on the small of my back.

“Don’t look so cheery,” she snapped. “Those two have been havingvery loudanduninterruptedsex for the lasttwo hours!”

Yay!

“Right on!” I cried exuberantly.

Martha’s eyebrows hit her hairline. “Right on? I live right next door.”

“I know. I’m sorry, but?—”

“And when Jacob opened the door, he told me you were to blame for this. So you talked him intofinallyextricating his head from his ass, go down there and tell them to move the festivities to his place. He lives next to William and Zachary. I know for a fact they sleep with a wave machine on, because they told me. Maybe that machine will drown out this incessantcopulation.”

“We’ve all been wanting them to get together for a long time,” I reminded her.

“Of course we have!” she exclaimed. “But when he did her, I thought he’d take her to his place. She’s dainty. With the noise I’m hearing, I’m afraid he’s gonna fuck her in half.”

I heard Cap start laughing behind me, and I couldn’t stop the snort that came out as I held back my own.

“This isn’t funny!” she yelled.

“Just be happy for them, and I’ll find time to call Alexis tomorrow,” I promised.

“Good God,” she grumbled, shaking her head and moving to the door. “The things I do for you people.”

I followed her, saying, “I swear. I’ll handle this tomorrow.”

She turned in the open door and warned, “You better.”

I did the motions with my finger as I replied, “Cross my heart.”

Her eyes went beyond me and up to Cap, who’d followed me to the door.

“You. Stud muffin. Keep it down. You have neighbors. These walls are solid, but they aren’t magical.”

She then put up her nose and huffed down the walkway.

Gliding an arm around my stomach, Cap pulled me from the door, closed it and locked it.

He then turned me to face him, shifted me around and shuffled me backward.

“You got Jacob to go for it?” he asked.

“I’ve had an interesting night,” I admitted.
