It had a chain-link fence against the alley, and I held my breath in stunned surprise as they scaled it with the same ease as they’d walk through a gate.

Luna broke the silence to whisper, “Holy wow.”

She could say that again.

But Cap just did that.

Cap went in there.

Cap was in there.

“Are the police coming?” I whispered to Tex.

“No, darlin’.”

It was hard to keep my voice quiet when I asked a terrified, “Why?”

“Because they have no probable cause to enter that building,” Tex explained.

“But Genesis saw them take Cameo there,” I told him.

He turned his head from having his eyes locked on the warehouse and said, “Okay then. The truth. Because those men are going to deal with the jackasses in that building in a way the police can’t. And your girl who gave you that information probably has to go back out on the streets. So she can’t be known as a rat by reporting what she saw to the police. They’ll get the job done, darlin’. The police can clean up.”

“Oh,” I said.

He nodded and looked back at the warehouse.

I looked at the warehouse.

Luna, I knew but didn’t check, was looking at the warehouse.

All was quiet on the warehouse front. It didn’t seem like anything was happening in there. There weren’t any lights coming from inside. There wasn’t any motion. There were no men screaming in agony, at least not that we could hear from where we were.

But my heart was beating so fast, I could feel it pumping in my chest. And I was getting sweaty like the temperature in the cab of the Denali had ratcheted up thirty degrees.

We waited and nothing.

We waited more, and more nothing.

This was followed by even more waiting, and nothing.

“Maybe we should call the police,” I suggested.

“Hold,” Tex replied.

“Tex, this is taking a long time.”

“Hold,” Tex repeated.

“Tex—”

“There it is,” he murmured, pushed open his door and got out.

Even in the shadows, I knew that body, I knew that gait.

And sauntering purposefully to the chain-link fence was Cap.

I got out.
