“Yes, Daddy.”

“Okay, here go, ready?”

She is bouncing in her seat, at least as much as the seatbelt allows her to.

“Okay, so I want to ask your mommy to marry me.”

She claps and I burst into laughter.

“So, is that okay with you?” I ask, still laughing.

“Yes, Daddy,” she announces. “Oooh, Mommy needs a pretty dress.”

I laugh some more. “She does, but before that, we need to get her a ring. Do you want to come with me and look at pretty rings for Mommy?”

I park in front of the jewelry store and take my daughter inside.

I find the perfect ring and show it to my daughter.

“So shiny, Daddy. Can I have one too?”

So, I pick a shiny ring for my little birdie and tell her I’ll give it to her after we give Mommy hers. But she’ll have to keep the secret in her heart.

“Okay, Daddy. I promise.”

We drive back to the apartment.

“Now remember, little birdie, you can’t tell Mommy about the rings or that Daddy will ask her to marry him, okay? That is our secret.”

She nods very solemnly.

As we wait for her mother to return, a giddy Aurora bustles around the tiny apartment, trying to make things look perfect.

“Daddy, when you and Mommy get married, will you come live with us?”

“No, honey. We’ll all be living together in a brand-new home. How’s that?”

“Yayy. We’re all going to live together.”

“We are, sweetie. Isn’t it amazing?”

Leaning back on the sofa, I pull the ring out of the box to look at it, twirling it around my finger as I think about our future together.

Getting away from the whole rock god thing was a true blessing.

I had no idea how bad that whole life really was, until I was able to take a step back and look at myself through the eyes of my daughter.

I would do anything for her and Lucy. I would stop the world if that was what they needed.

The television comes on, and I look to see Aurora has the remote on her hand. The screen is nothing but ambulances and reporters. “Can you hand me that, sweetie? I want to listen to what they are saying.” I put the ring back into the box as tension fills me, then turn up the sound.

“Another accident on the 101 because of paparazzi harassment has taken the life of at least one woman today.”

My heart stops, and I stand, my eyes on the screen. This can’t be them, can it?

There hasn’t been any trouble since Lucy’s accident.

I have laid low, I’m no longer newsworthy.
