After a quick, healthy breakfast, I made my way down to the car, and for some reason, I found myself more aware and tentative of my appearance.

Attempting to shake off this adolescent behavior, I greeted Russell as he held open the door to the car.

By the time I’d gotten to the office, I’d already been inundated with emails and requests requiring my assistance, attention, and approval.

I knew that since my infancy, it had been planned that when my father finally decided to retire, I would inherit the business and continue to run it as my father, grandfather, and great-grandfather had.

My family’s business managed to succeed and strive beyond most people’s wildest dreams—I didn’t have a problem with its success or history. I did, however, feel that it was time to change and adapt to the times we were living in. And that was one of the many hurdles I knew I would eventually face. Those that had been there for decades were incapable of change. Their views were single-minded. The future, the legacy that I knew one day would fall upon me, was never something I wished for. It was something I had always been told would happen. I had never been able to choose anything in my life for myself. Not wanting to dwell on thoughts that wouldn’t come to fruition for many years, I focused on the dozens of emails I needed to get through and prepare for my meeting with Serena.

Something I had been envisioning for days.

I finished sending the last few emails and correspondence when Charlotte buzzed in.

“Mr. Chambers, the team from Parker & Associates is set up and waiting in the conference room for your two o’clock.”

“Thank you, Charlotte. I’ll be right there.”

So, she decided to still bring her team in with her. Interesting.

I wondered if she did that intentionally, worrying how things would be with us alone again.

I headed to the bathroom in my office, splashed some water on my face, and prepared to see the woman who had been haunting my dreams.

Walking into the conference room, a young man greeted me. He couldn’t have been much older than twenty-five.

Despite his almost adolescent-looking face, he nearly towered over me when he approached me.

Jesus, he must’ve been about six foot nine!

“Good afternoon, I’m Brody Anderson.”

We shook hands, and he introduced the other team members to the table.

Picking up the folder placed in front of me, I skimmed through the notes, eagerly waiting for her arrival.

“As you can see, we have retained three more agreements, and the settlements are currently being processed with the appointed lawyers. A meeting is scheduled next week with another of the abstentions as the owner is currently abroad, and they have arranged for a family member to attend and act as their proxy. Apparently, full requirements have already been discussed, and at the moment, things are looking good, so we will be able to come to an agreement with them as well.”

As I waited for Mr Anderson to finish, I continued to scan the room, and the one face I expected to see was nowhere to be found.

“Is Ms Parker running late?”

I tried my best to hide the irritation in my voice, but I was pretty sure everyone could tell just how fucking pissed I was.

“I’m afraid she couldn’t attend today’s meeting. Something came up at the office. She hoped we could go over our progress so far and discuss what we still have to do and how realistic our timeline of getting everything done compares to yours. I hope that is not a problem, sir?”

Bullshit.

That was complete and utter rubbish that she couldn’t make the meeting.

There was no way this didn’t have something to do with me and what happened on Saturday night.

I regained my equilibrium and tried to erase the nervous and uneasy look that had started to creep upon Mr Anderson’s face.

“No, that will be fine. Let’s get on with it.”

To my partial annoyance, the associates managed to keep up with my quick-fire questions, suggestions, and input.

I knew my foul mood wasn’t their fault, but I couldn’t shake the frustration that bubbled inside me.
