“My question exactly.” Nate narrows his eyes as he sips an iced tea. Even though it’s chilly as can be outside.

“Uh, working on my class project with Rodriguez,” I say, hoping they scram already.

“Really?” Nate’s gossipy old woman expression would normally make me laugh. But not today.

Conor smirks. “Very cozy for a class project.”

“Oh, trust me. I wanted to maintain a minimum distance of ten feet, but as you can see,” Tinker Bell says while motioning around, “the place is packed.”

“Right.” Nate takes a very loud sip of his drink.

“Anyway, carry on.” Conor grabs our buddy by the shoulder and pushes him away from us. “See you at practice, Captain.”

“Uh huh.”

I wait until they’re well away from the café to rest back on the couch.

“We were this close to being caught. What if they’d arrived a few minutes earlier when you…” She trails off, staring at me with her open mouth.

“But they didn’t.”

“For now.” She frowns. “No more displays of affection on campus. Ever.”

All the air in my lungs comes out. “Fine. But off campus, yes?”

“Oh, yes. Absolutely.”

Grinning, I sneak my arm around her again. “Can’t wait.”

CHAPTER 26

LUZ

I’m pretty sure Max can tell I’m three shaky rabbits in a trench coat. Not only did I convince him the date should be in the next town over, to really make sure no one from our teams catches us, but I’m also freaking out about the fact that I’m officially on a date with Max Cassiano. Only the hottest guy I’ve ever met. Who opens the door for me even though I can do it myself, but in a way that is so sweet it shows he’s just trying to help.

“You okay?” He squeezes my hand in his, snapping me back to the present.

“Uh, yeah. Totally fine.”

Totally burning up inside because of him is more like it.

Max put some product on his hair that keeps it in place, a perfect little wave that begs to be messed with. His outfit is simple, a crisp white button-down shirt under a black bomber jacket for winter, black jeans, and boots to match.

When we enter the place, an employee shows us to a room with lockers where people can leave their stuff. I hang back for a moment, admiring his frame as he removes his jacket and hangs it. The shirt has to be tailored, because there’s no way they make it for shoulders that broad and a waist that narrow.

“Allow me?” He smiles at me, polite like I’ve never known him.

I turn around so he can remove my trench coat, about to tease him for the pleasantries, when he gasps.

“What?”

“Tinker Bell, you didn’t have to attack me this hard.”

I have to press my lips together not to bark a laugh because we’re not the only ones in the room. When I face him, he’s holding my trench coat as if it’s a pillow. Those eyes I can’t get enough of roam up and down my body, leaving a trail of fire in their wake.

“Like what you see, pretty boy?”

He shakes his head hard. “Like doesn’t cover it.” It takes him another moment to tear his attention from me and back to the task of hanging my coat.
