Hawk nodded, and he couldn’t relax. Not in a situation when the people he cared for were in trouble.

Reaching over, Cannon pinched the side of Hawk’s thigh. Hard.

“Fuck, man! What the hell?” Hawk swore.

Cannon leaned closer to his ear. “Calm the fuck down or we’re gonna be dragged out of here in pieces,” he said through is teeth. “And then we’ll be no damn good to her.”

Hawk nodded, dragging in deep, slow breaths. “Right. Right. You’re right.”

The fact Cannon was swearing so much told him his partner was stressed, too. Hawk needed to be strong for all of them. He’d get them all out in one piece, protect them both.

But just as he managed to ratchet down his tension a notch, an explosion went off across the room, blowing out part of the wall.

“Holy fuck,” Cannon gasped.

Hawk was already sprinting forward. When Zoran had said diversion, he hadn’t meant subtle.

Around them, guests and servers ran in different directions, either trying to escape the room or fight the men flooding into it. Hawk dodged them as he made a beeline toward Devon, trusting Cannon was on his heels. No one seemed to notice them in the pandemonium.

Except Devon.

Her eyes widened when she saw them.

“Oh my God,” she whispered. “Oh thank God. Oh my God. You’re here!”

Hawk leapt the barrier and pulled out the key. Quickly, he fitted it into the cuffs that restrained her arms behind her back, the chain attached to a short post to hold her in place. “We got ya, baby girl. We’re getting you out of here. Right now.”

While Hawk worked, Cannon knocked down part of the enclosure then created a shield with his body to block the view of the two of them.

“Hey, what do you think you’re doing?”

Hawk’s attention swiveled to the man rushing toward them. Cannon whirled into action. Letting out all the aggression that had built since yesterday, aggression he’d apparently been hiding, he planted his fist right in the man’s nose, laying him out flat.

When Hawk’s hand caught his arm, he wheeled around ready to fight.

“Come on,” Hawk said, pulling him. “Jesus, Cannon. I thought I was the dangerous one.”

Before Cannon could reply, Hawk swept Dev into his arms and hustled them toward the door where they’d entered. Her arms squeezed around his neck, her face planted in his chest while she sobbed, though he could barely hear it over the pandemonium in the room. He ached to soothe her. He couldn’t. Not until they were out of here.

Cannon shoved people out of their way to make a path for them. Apparently, the calm he’d exuded had hidden anger as violent as Hawk’s. It would be hours before their adrenaline wore off.

If they got out.

They had to.

Hawk wasn’t sure how they’d get past the guards outside the ballroom, but that was a problem to worry about in a few minutes.

“I don’t think so,” a snide, impeccably dressed man said, stepping before them. “My merchandise isn’t going anywhere.”

“She’s coming with us,” Hawk growled.

“How precious,” the man commented, lifting his hand to reveal the gun he held. Hawk wished he could reach for his own. He’d have fancy-pants dead before the man knew what happened. “Put her down. You can leave without her and live. Or you can carry on and die. And she’ll still remain. Your choice.”

Eyes never leaving the guy, Hawk set Dev on her feet, but he pushed her behind him. Cannon moved in to protect her from the other side.

“You must be Walter,” Hawk spat, hoping to distract the man while slowly reaching for his gun.

“Heard of me?”
