A cheerful female voice begins speaking over the footage. “So, there’s been a lot of debate over this video of an older man and younger woman displaying affection in public. Many cry ‘gold digger’ or insist it’s a ‘daddy issue’ situation. But here’s my take: love is love, regardless of age, race, gender, or any other factor. This couple looks genuinely happy in each other’s company, and at the end of the day, that’s all that really matters.”

I stare at the screen in disbelief as it shows a photo of the speaker; a pretty brunette around Tanya’s age. The video continues with her discussing her own relationship with an older man and encouraging people to be more open-minded. By the end, I’m stunned by this woman’s thoughtful and insightful take.

Diane pauses the video again, peering up at me anxiously. “So…what did you think?”

“She made some excellent points,” I admit, still reeling from the revelation that my relationship with Tanya has become a topic of public debate. “I’m surprised anyone would be so open-minded.”

“That’s Lizzy for you,” Diane says with an admiring smile. “She’s never afraid to challenge people’s preconceived notions and biases. I think that’s why her channel has gotten so popular.”

“Well, tell her I appreciate her support,” I say wryly, handing Diane’s phone back to her. At least there’s one self-proclaimed expert on our side.

Diane fidgets, avoiding my gaze. “Dad, I owe you an apology. After watching Lizzy’s video, I realized…I may have had some preconceived notions and biases of my own.”

I frown, not following. “About what?”

“About age-gap relationships,” she admits. “And yours in particular. I was upset when I saw that video of you and Tanya, but…it wasn’t really because of Tanya. It was because of the age difference. Because it’s not…normal, or conventional. But Lizzy’s right—love is love. And Tanya clearly makes you happy, Dad. That’s all that really matters.”

Stunned, I stare at my daughter. I had never expected her to come around so completely. “Diane…thank you. That means a lot to me.”

“You’re welcome,” she says softly. “I guess I had to do some growing up. Tanya’s my best friend, and she loves you with all her heart. I should’ve been happy for you both from the start.”

“The important thing is that you came around,” I tell her. “And Tanya will appreciate your support too. She was worried this might damage your friendship.”

“Tell her not to worry about that,” Diane says firmly. “What kind of friend would I be if I couldn’t accept who she loves?”

I pull Diane into a hug, overwhelmed with gratitude and pride in how much she’s matured. “You’ve turned into a remarkable young woman, you know that?”

She hugs me back tightly. “Thanks, Dad. You’re not so bad yourself.”

I release Diane from the hug, and I can’t stop smiling. “So, does this mean you’re willing to have dinner with Tanya and me? Sometime in the future? If it so happens to take place?”

Diane nods. “Definitely. I’d like that.”

“Wonderful.” I pause, wondering how to broach my next concern. “Diane, I know this is still difficult for you in some ways. Your mother…she’ll always be an important part of our lives. Are you worried I’m trying to replace her with Tanya?”

Diane shakes her head. “No, not at all. Mom would want us both to be happy. And Tanya makes you happy—anyone can see that. I just want the same for you, Dad. You deserve it.”

Her understanding and maturity continue to amaze me. “Thank you, sweetheart. Your support and blessing mean everything.” I squeeze her hand. “Tanya won’t ever replace your mother. But she is special to me, and I’m glad you can see how much joy we bring each other.”

“I can,” Diane confirms. “And that’s why I’m behind this relationship 100 percent now. You should be with someone who makes you happy…and Tanya does. I’m sorry it took me so long to come around.”

“All that matters is that you did,” I tell her. “The past is in the past. I’m just looking forward to us all being able to spend time together again like we used to. That is, if she takes me back.”

“I hope she will too,” says Diane, smiling at me. “I’d hate to be responsible for the way things ended between you two.”

“It’s not your burden to bear, sweetheart. Things will pan out the way they’re destined to. I’ll let her know she’s welcome anytime,” I promise, overjoyed at how perfectly things have turned out. My relationship with Tanya, and my relationship with my daughter, suddenly seem poised to become even stronger. All thanks to the fact that Diane has grown into a wise and caring young woman. She’s the greatest gift her mother ever gave me…and the reason I know our family will endure.

Chapter twenty-five

One Last Workout

Tanya

The phone rings, jolting me from my afternoon nap. I grab it without checking the caller ID, and my heart skips a beat as I hear Brian’s gravelly voice.

“Tanya, it’s Brian. I was hoping you’d come train me today.”

My cheeks flush as I sit up. Images of our heated workouts together flood my mind. “I thought we agreed it was best to end things.”
