Daniel put himself directly in front of Issac, giving him the biggest, most stuck-up smirk Dimitri had ever seen. The urge to punch it right off his face was almost enough to override the command Issac had given him. “So what is it, Ike,” he said, leering down at Issac as he came to a stop to avoid touching the other man. “Did you just start selling it off campus? Is that why no one gets to have your number? Gotta keep it free for all the Johns that call you from the back of the sheets?”

Issac’s expression was unchanged, the same hard mask that never gave any emotion. It was a measuring, soul-piercing gaze that Dimitri had experienced a handful of times and always made him feel like Issac somehow knew every single secret Dimitri had ever had. Something that no one else had ever been able to do. “When your father writes a check to the college this semester,” he said, his tone unhurried and uncaring, “tell him the library needs new computers.”

Daniel suddenly flushed and let out a sound that might have been “how” and “you” mushed together, but Issac was already stepping around him like he was nothing more than a detour in the path.

“Ten minutes to eight,” he said, loud and clear as Dimitri smirked at Daniel and shouldered him out of the way to rejoin Issac as he entered the classroom.

“Are you alright,” he asked quietly as they took their usual seats at the front and Issac started opening and closing every pocket on the new backpack.

“Fine,” Issac muttered, narrowing his eyes as he opened another pocket. “Who the fuck needs this many pockets?”

Dimitri felt himself breathe, not realizing he had been holding the breath since Daniel’s comment about a sugar daddy. It didn’t matter how the Cat dressed him up and the gifts he showered Issac with. Issac was still Issac, and Issac only cared about things like his backpack being out of order and not being able to find his note-taking pens.
