“Papa,” Dimitri burst out.

“Zatknis’, mal’chik,” Volkov roared without looking at him.

Dimitri’s jaw slammed shut as he paled. Clearly, Little Volkov was used to dealing with his Papa and not the Pakhan. For all Felinus knew, that was the first time the elder Volkov had ever raised his voice to his youngest child.

“We retract our claim on the Cat,” Volkov continued, his voice returning to its previous volume. “This is not poaching. I can see now that the only way Issac would ever get the help he desperately needed was by the Cat’s methods though I may not be fond of them. We will continue our watch over him. Just as the Family offers their protection and support, the Organization will offer its own. Let us pay back a long overdue fine for the suffering he has gone through alone, and watch how far he will soar.”

“He will remain with the Cat,” Esposito said.

“Of course,” Volkov agreed. “The boy is very stubborn but cats are more stubborn than that. I see no reason to change what they have worked out amongst themselves unless he is being mistreated in some way. I only ask that I be updated on his progress and health and that we look into him having a car of his own.”

“I would usually have no objections to him using one of my cars, Pakhan,” Felinus said. He absolutely had objections to Issac driving himself places. “But his driver’s license is four years expired and I doubt he will agree to take time away from his studying to retake the test. Making sure he eats on a schedule is a bit like battling a toddler at times. However, I will be happy to push the issue once winter break starts, so he will have transportation from then on. If he mentions driving before, I will do all I can to make the necessary arrangements within a reasonable time frame.”

A chair scraped against the floor suddenly, and hands twitched for weapons. All eyes turned to Little Volkov as he surged to his feet, still pale except for pink blotches on each of his cheeks.

Adrian hissed at him and grabbed at his wrist, but as he had in the hall with Fritz, Dimitri twitched away.

“I need air,” he muttered, not looking at anyone as he walked out of the room.

Fritz let out a slow sigh through his nose as he glanced at Adrian and stood up to follow Little Volkov out, Brutus and Lucio also standing to leave the room so the table remained even.
