“Oh, that’s fake,” Cass blurted, pushing me in Henry’s direction. “They were just doing that to make you jealous. She’s only been in love with you her whole life.”

“Cassidy!” I screeched.

“Brilliant!” Henry was beaming.

“Hold on a second?—”

Before I could finish my sentence, Henry scooped me up and pressed a brief kiss to my lips that shocked me mute.

“You won’t be sorry, Bits. Thank you. Thank you!” He spun me around again, and I thought I might be sick. “I’m going to go tell Davis. He’ll be so pleased. I’ll be back, all right? Don’t go anywhere.”

Cass squealed and squeaked and bounced and hugged me as I stood there, completely dazed as I tried to collect my wits. When she let me go, I laughed and excused myself for the loo, meeting Remy’s eyes on the way. He was still standing there with my drink in his hand, dick whistle around his neck and sunglasses on his face, though the headband seemed to have broken and lay in pieces at his feet. I pushed into the bathroom, which only had room for one, but before I could lock the door, Remy shoved it open and locked it shut behind him.

In a breath, I was pinned against the wall with Remy arched over me, our noses barely touching, our breath noisy and thick and mingling.

Another breath dragged me into him, our lips colliding. It wasn’t a kiss—it was a claiming. It was a hot brand, his name singed into my soul by way of his lips. He gripped my face, my hips tacked to the wall by his. There was no air that wasn’t him, no breath that wasn’t his—he owned me for a long, relentless moment.

When his lips finally let me go, I realized distantly that my legs were wound around his waist, my hands scrabbling against his chest, his shirt fisted in my hands.

“He fucking kissed you,” Remy whispered, the words licking my mouth.

I nodded stupidly.

“He doesn’t get to kiss you. What did he want?”

“I...” My thoughts found no purchase. Remy’d kissed me into oblivion.

He snapped his fingers. “Jessa. What did he want?”

“To . . . he asked me if I’d be his date tomorrow night.”

“And what did you say?” he asked through his teeth.

“Nothing. He and Cass decided without me.”

He disappeared so fast, I nearly fell to the ground. For a moment, he faced the opposite wall, his hand in his hair.

“Remy?” I reached out to touch him but he stepped away.

He whipped around and grabbed me by the arm. “I was wrong. Let’s go tell Cass. Let’s tell her right now.”

“Remy, wait!” I dug in my heels and pulled him to a stop. “We can’t.”

“Why not?”

“Because...well, because last night, she said again she’d never forgive me, and she meant it.” I didn’t know where the tears came from, only that they started in my throat, choking me quiet. I swallowed. “She said she’d never forgive me.”

“You’re not going on a date with that fucker, Jess.”

“If I go out there and say no, Cass will sort it out. She’ll know we’re together.”

The muscles in his jaw flexed.

“It doesn’t mean anything. I want nothing to do with him, you know that.” I reached for him slowly, like he was a wild animal. He looked much like one.

His nostrils flared.

“Remy, listen to me. It’s all for show. It’s one silly little dinner, and then the next night, I’ll be with you.”
