Carl turns to Dalton, raising a brow. “You know what I need from you, son,” he says, and Dalton’s face pales. “And if Daisy truly wants to help you, then this would most certainly pay off your debt,” he continues looking at me.

“Absolutely fucking not!” I grind out, knowing exactly where he’s going with this.

Dalton shakes his head. “No, Dad.”

“Come on, Daisy. We’re leaving,” I add, holding my hand out to her, but she bats it away, looking at Carl.

“What proposition?” she repeats.

“It’s no secret that I want Dalton to settle down and marry, that I want a grandchild to carry on the family name.”

“Stop fucking talking, Dad! That’s enough!” Dalton snaps, turning his attention to Daisy. “Get up. Just fucking go with Drix.”

She ignores him, instead straightening her spine and nodding. “Go on, Carl. Finish what you’ve got to say.”

He smiles then like he’s already won. “You agree to marry my son, give me a grandchild, and I will wipe Drix’s debt the second that child is born.”

“No!” Dalton shouts.

“Don’t even think about it, Daisy!” I warn.

She turns to look at me, then at Dalton, before levelling her gaze with Carl’s. “If you write off Drix’s debt immediately, and release Drix from his obligations, I promise that I will marry Dalton and give you a grandchild,” she says.

“The hell you will!” I shout.

“How do I know you’ll go through with it?” Carl asks, ignoring me and narrowing his eyes at her.

“Draw up a contract. So long as Drix’s debt is written off now, I will sign it. At that point he’ll no longer be your enforcer. We will keep Brownstone Estate, and the only tie we’ll have to your family will be our child. Dalton’s and mine.”

Dalton strides towards Daisy, stepping in front of her. “This is not happening! You’ve no idea what you’re agreeing to here.”

She draws herself upright, and despite being almost a foot shorter than Dalton, she stares him down, fierce in her intention. “I will do the right thing, for all of us. You will marry me, we will have a child, and Drix will be free to love Lia and Toby. I refuse to believe this is over for them.”

“This is fucking ridiculous,” he argues. “I am not marrying you.”

“Over my dead body,” I add, fucking vibrating with anger. “You’re not doing this.”

Stepping around Dalton, she faces me. “I am, and I will.”

“Daisy, I don’t need you to do this. Not to mention the fact I will kill Dalton if he lays one fucking finger on you.”

“Precisely my point,” Dalton adds, agreeing with me. “This isn’t just a fake marriage, this is a child we’re talking about. Need I remind you how they’re made.”

“All I need is your sperm. I don’t need to fuck you to have your baby, Dalton,” Daisy snaps.

Carl tips back his head and laughs. “You know what, Daisy Hammer, you’ve got a lot more spunk than I’ve given you credit for. I think I’m going to enjoy having you as my daughter-in-law.”

“No,” I persist.

“If you’re free from your obligations, you’ll have a chance to win Lia back, Drix. I know you can do it. I believe in you. I believe in your love,” Daisy continues passionately.

“I can’t let you ruin your life on a chance we might be able to save our relationship, Daisy. I won’t let you do this,” I say, shaking my head.

“Drix, when I was a kid, you saved me. Now I’m saving you. You need Lia. You need Toby. I love you, and I’m doing this for you with or without your approval,” she croaks, reaching for me, her hand pressing against my chest. “I want you to be happy. Let me do this for you. Please.”

“And what about your happiness? What about that, huh?” I ask her.

“You know I’ve always wanted a family of my own. This baby will be my family. At least I know what I’m getting into with Dalton, and I’ll be getting something precious out of it too.”
