“I know she was hurt badly in the past. I also know she’s capable of learning from that experience, and from this one.”

“You’re wrong. She’s gone out with one loser after the other since that dick broke her heart. Lewis wasn’t good enough for her. None of the arsehole’s she’s spent time with have been good enough for her,” he adds.

“So you’re going to just scare off every man she chooses to date even if one of them could turn out to be just what she needs?”

“If I have to,” he snaps.

“Why?” I press.

“I told you why. I’m just looking out for her. She can complain about it all she likes, but I won’t stop.”

“Is that really the only reason?”

“What other reason would there be?” he counters, eying me.

Suddenly the conversation I had with Dalton last night replays in my head. Could it be that Daisy is the woman he’s interested in? I decide that the only way to find out is to ask him directly. “Dalton, do you like Daisy?”

He barks out a laugh. “She’s a pain in my arse.”

“Is she the woman you wanted advice about?” I ask, being more specific.

He meets my gaze, something flickering in his eyes before he shuts it down with a biting laugh. “Fuck, no. She’s absolutely not my type in any way, shape or form.”

I nod, not believing him for a second. “Either way,” I continue, “Scaring off men she likes is only going to make her hate you more. You must see that.”

“She hates me?” he asks, his frown deepening.

“Can you blame her?”

Dalton rolls his eyes. “Daisy doesn’t hate anyone. It’s her one major flaw. She can’t tell the difference between a good person and someone who’s a wolf in sheep's clothing. That much is obvious.”

“Perhaps you don’t know her as well as you think,” I reply, gathering up my coat and bags once more. “I’m pretty sure she’s got you sussed.”

He bristles. “I know all there is to know about Daisy Hammer. She’s like my little sister.”

I shake my head, giving him a pitying smile as I stand. “I think we both know you don’t see her that way, Dalton.”

He opens his mouth to reply, then slams it shut. “See you at work tomorrow,” he says instead, pushing upwards from the table. “Now if you’ll excuse me, I have work to do.”

With that, he strides off and I’m left wondering whether Daisy has any idea that Dalton Gunn is secretly harbouring feelings for her, because from where I’m standing it’s as plain as day.

TWENTY-THREE

DRIX

“The wedding is in ten days time, I need to be certain the security is tight,” Robert says, looking up at me from behind his huge walnut desk. Placed before him are ten pages of my meticulously written plans. I’ve left no stone unturned. I’m good with the security side of my job, at least this part of it doesn’t make me feel like I’m just some mindless thug.

“You have nothing to worry about, I have everything covered,” I reply, certain of my abilities. “I have ample security arranged. The press have been given accommodation at Walter’s B&B in town, and will be watched closely by a member of my team. All of them have been thoroughly vetted.”

“Good, I don’t want any two-bit hacks sneaking into the ceremony thinking they can get a cheap shot of my bride before the news establishments who’ve paid for the privilege have released their pictures.”

“We will also have blocks on all the roads leading in and out of town, and everyone will be thoroughly searched, guests included. It’s highly unlikely that any uninvited guests or unauthorised press will slip through, but we have contingencies in place just in case. It’s watertight.”

“I can see that,” he says, easing back into his seat as he eyes me. “I appreciate the work you’ve put into this. It’s an important day for me and my new bride. I can’t have any mistakes.”

“I understand.”

“Will you be bringing a guest to the wedding?” he asks me, changing the subject slightly.
