Through the video monitor I was using, I saw when Emily finally stirred and rushed upstairs before she completely woke. I didn’t want her to think I’d left her.

I sat on the edge of the bed as her eyes fluttered open. “Hey, beautiful baby, how are you feeling?”

She blinked rapidly, several times in a row. “Better,” she rasped.

Picking up the sippy cup of water I’d set by the bed, I held it to her mouth.

She took several long pulls. “Good water.”

I laughed at her innocence, then laughed again as she picked up my hands and set them on her belly.

“Rub.”

I rubbed at her request. She was definitely feeling better.

“You look better, Little girl. How is your head?” Elliot asked, coming into the room.

“Better.”

“Is there any pain left?”

She thought for a minute, her expression pensive as she seemed to be taking stock. “Only a tiny bit.”

“Good, that’s what I want to hear. I think that all of the stress caused you to have a migraine. I’m going to leave some suppositories just like the medication that I gave you in the IV, okay? If any pain comes back, you tell Onyx and he can give you another dose. I want you to be device-free for the next twenty-four hours. No screen time at all because the light can trigger your headache and make it worse. Lots of fluids and rest.”

“Yes, Sir.”

“Elliot wants you to get all better so you and Teagan can have a playdate,” I said.

Her face lit up. “She wants to meet me?” Her words pulled at my heart. How badly had this princess… my princess, been beaten down?

“Why wouldn’t she want to meet you? You’re amazing!”

I fucking loved Elliot. He knew just what to say to the Little ones to ease their fears.

She beamed and I bent down to kiss her forehead, wrapping my arms around her and holding her tight.

We listened to the rest of Elliot’s instructions before he let himself out.

“I’m so glad you’re awake, princess. I missed you.”

She reached up, rubbing her fingers over my beard. “Thank you for taking such good care of me.”

“It is my honor.”

She tilted her head and frowned. “I’ve heard Pike say that to Dallas. Travis and Maddox say that to Reagan too.”

“Because it’s true. We are privileged that you Little ladies allow us to care for you so intimately.”

She was quiet for a minute. “You think it’s a privilege to care for me?”

“Of course I do. I like doing Daddy things. I love doing Daddy things with you. You are such a sweet Little princess and I’m really glad that you’re trusting me with your adult side and your Little side. I know that trusting isn’t easy for you.”

“I don’t know how I was able to trust you so quickly. I think because I was so scared when M-Malachi showed up and you were a safe place,” she admitted.

“Maybe. Trauma does weird things to people. You may never understand why the fear went away so fast.”

“What if it comes back?”
