"An eye for an eye," Aunt Sarah murmured, almost to herself.

Rachel's hands clenched, nails biting into her palms, the sting a lifeline amid the roil of emotions.

"Targeted..." It was barely a whisper, but it carried the weight of dread.

"Because of her." Aunt Sarah's nod was slight, an affirmation that buckled Rachel's knees.

"Mom..." Rachel couldn't finish. The image of her mother, vibrant and alive, clashed violently with this new specter of a criminal mastermind.

"Put you all in the crosshairs." Aunt Sarah's hand came to rest on the back of a chair, her grip white-knuckled.

"Because of what she did."

"Exactly because of it."

Disbelief warred within her, a tumultuous storm that threatened to sweep her away. The woman who had kissed her scraped knees, who had sung lullabies into the night — that woman was a stranger now.

"Her actions..." Rachel struggled to reconcile the pieces of a fractured past.

"Set everything in motion," Aunt Sarah finished, her gaze locked with Rachel's.

"I... I don't believe it," Rachel insisted.

Aunt Sarah shrugged. "He says there is an audio recording. Of your mother planning the heist."

"Where? Where's this recording."

"He doesn't have it. But he told me who does."

Rachel stared at her aunt, her stomach dropping. "Who?"
