It’s almost humorous to see his eyes go wide as I tell the story. Then I reveal Knox’s tattoo but refuse to tell him its location when he pushes for information. “He will kill me,” I emphasize.

“No, he won’t; you’re his mate,” Murmur counters, waving away my concern.

“You’re right. He will kill you for knowing,” I tease. “Anyway, those words were, ‘Rage shall be thy weapon as your hands wield it so,’” I say and shrug.

“Eureka!” Murmur says, unexpectedly standing up and doing a little dance. He reaches down and grabs my hand, pulling me up.

“What?” I say, trying to catch my balance.

“It’s War that you’re channeling,” Murmur says. “You said it right in the words. Rage. What you created back there was rage, and it manifested into…”

“Invisible icicles?” I guess.

“Well, that’s what we’re about to find out. You’re in for a long night,” Murmur says with a smile and walks over to where the dummies are.

“Hey, but what about the gate? And Knots? And finding a way out of here?” I ask, trailing behind him.

“That’s what the others are for. You… my protégé, I get to train, so train you I shall,” he says, moving a dummy off to the side. “Now, get angry and hit that with your raging fingers of fury,” he smirks.

“Did I tell you that I hate you yet?” I glance at him with an annoyed look.

“Oh, chickadee, you haven’t started to hate me yet.” He gives me the cheesiest smile ever.

I wish I had this power down pat because I would love to punch him in his pretty mouth.

CHAPTER 43

I Spy With my Little Eye…

Lynx

Murmur flies off with my Rezzi-bear down the hall as Bez spins around and heads back to his seat with his fists clenched. “She’s a danger to everyone,” Bez growls. My chest rattles out a warning, as does Knox, as we both take his words for what they are: a threat. We might have stopped our approach, but that doesn’t mean the Vengeance Demon isn’t a threat to my mate. Knox’s eyes shift in my direction, and I find myself warming to the asshole.

Yes, he played a trick on my Rezzi, but the fact he’s as protective over her as I am earns him some points in my book. I nod in solidarity, and we both focus back on Bez.

“She only lacks training, which is where we come in,” Lucifer says. He turns his attention to us. “No need to get upset, gentlemen.” Moni bristles at the wording, and Lucifer smiles as Knox and I share another glance before taking our seats. “And, princess. Murmur is great at working through problems; he’ll get to the bottom of this.”

Even though everyone is seated, the tension in the room remains palpable, and I have the urge to just to run out and check on Rez to make sure she’s okay. Or just to escape this horrid group right now. I feel like I’ve been out of the loop for decades. Rez has made up with everyone that I last knew did her wrong, and she has other mates? How am I supposed to take that? I hear the faint click clack of heels down the hall and immediately know that Lilith is on her way in, and I swing my gaze in her direction.

“Get to the bottom of what?” Lilith asks, as she walks into the room with Trometh and another Demon by her side. Trometh carries a box about half his size. She rolls her pearls in between her fingers, but I notice her smile doesn’t reach her eyes.

“Rez apparently has a new power that Murmur is going to help her work out,” Astaroth says with a bored tone.

“Hmm,” she says, taking her seat.

Trometh and the other Demon move to the back of the room and start to polish and clean the bookshelves. Trometh moves items around to make room for the items from the box. Looks like busy work to me. Hardly work for a glorified assistant for a few centuries.

“What did you find out?” Lucifer asks Lilith, bringing my attention back to the Demons before me.

Lilith sighs and purses her lips before glancing around the room, settling on Lucifer. “That the portals are down. I talked to Matthew and explained that we can’t make it to the ceremony. He’s going to try to smooth over what he can with Elverson.”

“Well, at least there’s some good news with the portal being down,” Ryker says.

“That is?” JP asks, looking unconvinced.

“Having the portal closed can be the excuse for Levi not being at the ceremony. It’s a temporary solution, but it buys us time until the portals open. When will that happen?” Ryker asks, threading his fingers behind his head.

“That was another reason I reached out to your fathers. Carl, or Dr. Steinbeck, for some of you, is as old as dirt and loves to read as you might imagine. I asked him if he’s ever come across anything in his studies as to why the portals might be closed. I, for one, can’t remember a time, but I admit, I don’t always pay attention to the happenings around here.” Lilith shrugs, not looking at all apologetic.
