Page 49 of Tangled Innocence

But in a single conversation, Wren Turner laid waste to that hypothesis.

She not only agreed to put herself through the discomfort and inconvenience of pregnancy, but she also agreed to hand over this baby that she helped create. She was giving her sister the most intimate part of herself and relinquishing every right she might’ve had along the way.

I could never do anything like that. If there was a child out there that I knew was mine, there’s no fucking way I would step aside and watch someone else raise them.

“Fucking hell,” I spit as I read more. “She was helping them pay for the damn process, too. She’s got an active loan for the precise amount.”

Aleks leans over the table to get a better look. “Jeez. She must have really loved her sister, huh?” Settling back in his seat, he adds, “That’s gonna make things more complicated.”

“Tell me something I don’t know.” I grimace as I keep reading. It feels borderline invasive. Like I’ve got Wren herself splayed out naked and vulnerable on my desk. Come to think of it, that sounds kind of…

Cut it out, asshole.

Chuckling he gets to his feet. “It’s kinda funny, don’t you think?”

“What is?”

I know that smile of his: it means he’s about to make an observation that I won’t like. “You’ve fucked so many women—and the one female in this city you haven’t slept with is the one you managed to knock up.”

I jab a finger toward the door. “Out.”

Cackling, he heads for the door while I try not to obsess about just how cruel a bitch fate can be. Aleks might find it funny, but my balls don’t agree. They’re way past blue at this point. They’re fucking black and blue.

Every spare moment I have, I’m fighting the image of Wren on her knees in front of me. Biting her bottom lip and trying to follow orders, even though she’s fighting her very nature to do it.

The kneeling thing was a test. A passing whim. And yet when she finally did it, when she yielded, when she submitted, she did it in a dress I could see straight through, with a body I couldn’t look away from even if it fucking killed me.

There was so much blood flooding to my cock that, for a moment, I’d almost taken leave of my senses and reached for her.

Thank God I didn’t.

If I did it, if I touched her, that would have been it. I’d have ripped that dress right off her and bent her over the coffee table and crossed lines that could never, ever be uncrossed.

Which would have been a disaster.

But at that particular moment, I wasn’t thinking about disasters or consequences or what I should or shouldn’t do. I was only thinking, I have to right this wrong. Surely the fact that she was carrying my baby entitled me to at least one torrid, intense whirlwind of a fuck.

Just one time.

And then I’d be able to put this burning desire to bed.

“Anything else before I go, Your Majesty?” Aleks calls from the door.

I start gathering up the files. I’m planning on going over them with a fine-toothed comb when I arrive home. “Tell Wren to get her belongings together. I’ll be out in a minute.”

“Roger.” Aleks peeks around the corner, then looks back in with a frown. “Uh, she’s not here. Did she already go home?”

I bounce upright. “What do you mean, ‘she’s not here’?”

“Which part is the confusing one? She ain’t here and her shit ain’t here, neither. Aren’t Jasper and Bronn her security detail? I saw them in the lobby when I came in, but that was like an hour ago.”

“Fuck!” I spit as I stuff the file into my briefcase and grab the cloned phone.

“I put a tracker on her phone, ‘member? You should be able to?—”

“I’m already on it,” I snap as I wait for the app to load and tell me where the hell my defiant little kiska has snuck off to.

“Well? Where is she?”
