“I do.”

And when the same question was put to her, the man didn’t even finish asking the sentence before she answered quickly, cutting him off.

“I do!”

Laughter followed her answer, and Magnus smiled down at her.

The officiant himself had a hearty laugh at her response. “Well, are there any here that object to this union?”

Magnus’s head whipped around to look upon his guests, daring someone to protest. Even if there was someone amongst the crowd who would speak up, Alexis knew that one look at his glowering eyes would effectively silence them on the spot. Silence followed the question.

“By the power vested in me by the State of New York, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.”

Magnus swooped down and captured Alexis’s lips with his own. Her first kiss as his wife was passionate and brought a crimson color to her cheeks. When they broke apart, it was so she could whisper to him.

“I love you.”

“I love you.”

The applause that met their union was thunderous. Magnus and Alexis walked down the center of the aisle, hand in hand.

The shifters that were seated immediately moved the chairs aside to create a dance floor, as the rain prevented anyone from leaving the barn. Tables were set up in an instant, and within minutes, the barn had transformed into a dining area and a dance floor.

The music began playing, and Magnus and Alexis had the first dance. With one hand around her waist and the other clasping her hand, they twirled to the deep vibrato of Frank Sinatra.

With every dip and turn, Alexis found herself in a state of bliss, which grew when she knew the best was yet to come. Standing on her tiptoes, she kissed her husband just as the song concluded.

Another round of applause followed them, and they made their way to a table at the front of the barn set up just for them. As more people filled the dance floor, Alexis and Magnus took a seat.

He poured two glasses of champagne and handed one to her, but she shook her head with a soft smile. He set the glass flutes on the table and looked at her. His brows creased in a frown.

“I have something I want to tell you,” Alexis said quietly so only he could hear. She put her hand on his to reassure him that everything was okay.

“What is it?” he asked, sounding worried.

She picked up his hand and placed it carefully over her still flat stomach. His eyes widened as the implication of what she was hinting hit him with full force.

“No …” he whispered, the smile on his face growing wider.

“Yes. I took a test this morning. It was positive.”

For a moment, she wasn’t sure how he would react, but his laughter and the kiss he placed gently on her lips were all the confirmation she needed that he was indeed happy about his impending fatherhood.

“Alexis, that is, quite possibly, the best wedding gift you could have ever given me.”

“Really? You’re happy about it?”

“Are you kidding?” he questioned incredulously. “I couldn’t be happier. Wow, I’m going to be a father …” The last was said mostly to himself, but Alexis was thrilled that the news of their baby brought him such joy.

It was the perfect beginning. While nothing could have made them happier, the thought of their family growing was the most idyllic way for them to close the door on the horrors of their past.

They could face the future with unblemished hopes and dreams while they prepared for the arrival of the newest panther shifter.
