I can't seem to stand any longer. The searing pain brings me to my knees, then I'm falling.
Lana grabs me and slows my fall and holds me in her lap.
“Oh God, Callum! No!” she yells out.
She brings her hand to my chest and applies pressure. The world around me is getting hazy. I look at Lana, to those green eyes that put the brightest emeralds to shame. I put my hand over hers against my chest and use what strength I have left to bring my other hand to her cheek, wiping away her tears. Off in the distance I hear Cole’s voice so clearly,
“Cal, fuck, Cal! I didn't mean to, no, no, no. What the fuck did I do! That's my little brother!”
I hear the sound of his gun dropping to the stone driveway and then footsteps running closer to me.
“Cal! I'm sorry!” he shouts out as he collapses down next to me. “Fuck, I didn’t mean to Cal! You’re gonna be okay little brother.”
“Callum, stay with me. You're alright. You're gonna be alright,” Lana's soft trembling voice says.
I see the panic in her eyes. She’s shaking and my body is going numb. I feel like I could simply float away if she wasnt still holding on to me. I know it's too late. I know this is the end. I feel it coming.
“I love you so much, little dove,” I manage to softly say.
“No, please Callum. I love you! Please don't leave me. Don't you dare leave me!” she sobs, shaking me.
“Thank you for loving me.” My words are a struggle to get out. I see Lana’s lips moving but I can't hear her. My vision slowly closes in and the last thing I see are green eyes and the girl who showed me what real love felt like. My little dove, my peace.
Chapter 20
Lana
Callum’s eyes close but I’m still shaking him, begging him to wake. “Please baby, please don't leave me,” I cry.
“Fuck! What did I do! Oh god, what the fuck did I do.”
Cole’s voice draws my attention back to him. He stands with his hands in his hair and wide eyes staring down at Callum’s bloody body.
“You killed him! You fucking killed him! He was happy! Why couldn’t you have left us alone you fucking bastard!” I scream.
“You. You!” he yells pointing a shaking finger at me. “That bullet was meant for you! This is your fault you fucking whore!”
Hatred fills his eyes as he lunges for me. I let go of Callum, scrambling back. Cole catches himself before almost trampling over Callum and I take advantage of his pause to swiftly get to my feet and race into the house, hearing Cole’s boots stomping after me.
Once more I find myself running from Cole when I thought those days were over. I decide this will be the last damn time I have to run from him. He’s taken everything from me.
My veins fill with anger, turning into a potent blend of rage and adrenaline. I failed twice at killing him before. Tonight, I will not fail a third time.
I make it to the kitchen and pull the large butcher knife from the wooden block on the counter and place my back to the wall against the side of the fridge and wait.
“Just like old times, huh Lana? You know I'll catch you and I'm really gonna enjoy slowly making you pay for taking my brother from me!” he snarls as he enters the kitchen.
My heart is racing as his slow footsteps come closer to me. I grip the knife tight in my hand. This is for everything he put me through. This is for Callum.
Cole stops in his tracks as he passes the fridge. I hold my breath and right when I can tell he senses me and begins to turn his head toward me. I move into action.
I swing the knife right into Cole’s stomach. The feeling of it sinking into his flesh would be enough to make me puke but that feeling is overpowered by the rage burning inside me.
Cole grunts and bends in half grabbing at his belly. I rip the knife back out as he falls to his knees curling in on himself like a wilted flower.
“Fuck,” he grunts.
I bring the knife over my head and stab him in his back. Another painful noise leaves Cole’s mouth as he reaches a bloody hand to the wound on his upper back. I stab again and again into his back until he falls completely to the ground moaning in pain.
