To add insult to injury, Edwin reaches down, grabs her hand, and pulls her in the direction of the hallway where the bathrooms are. And beyond that…access to the Lyons Club.

I have no reason to even guess at where they might be going. But my mind has no trouble jumping to one thing and one thing only.

He’s taking her to The Underground. He’s going to do nasty things with her.

And she’s going to become the new object of his affection because she isn’t off-limits like I am.

“What about you, Sonia, any news on the love front?” Farley’s voice snaps my attention back to the table.

“Have you met me? When would I even have the time? What about you, Farley? Roundabout is fair play.”

“Yeah, right. Because I’m here less time than you?” Farley sasses.

I laugh, though my heart isn’t in it. I just saw Edwin disappear down a hall just like he did with me all those weeks ago at the masquerade.

It should be me he takes down there. Nother. Whoever she is.

Maybe it’s the anger, or maybe it’s the gin, but I’m not going to sit here and let him have all the fun. I sit up on mystool and look down the long bar at all the patrons. I scan each face. No…no…no…

My eyes land on a guy toward the end of the bar who is chatting with the bartender a bit as he receives his drink. Looks like whisky neat.

Cute enough dude. Sexy drink. Easy enough.

Farley cocks an eyebrow. “What are you looking at?”

“My prey for the evening.”

Gina, Hazel, and Farley laugh. They must think I’m joking. But I’m not.

“Which one is it?”

I knock back the rest of my gin and tonic. “Light brown hair, whisky, great eyebrows.”

Farley does a double-take. “Uh, you sure you want to do that?”

“Yeah, why not? He’s hot.”

“He’s–”

Hazel grabs Farley’s arm. “Let her, she’s a big girl.”

More than that. I’m a grown ass woman. I’m almost thirty. And I can take what I want.

I abandon my stool and saunter down to the other end of the bar, letting my hair down in the process. I undo another button on my blouse to give just a sneak peek at the goods and then nestle in next to the guy, leaning on the bar to pretend like I’m getting the bartender’s attention. Instead, though, I glance over my shoulder at the guy and smile. “Hey.”

He smiles back. One cheek dimple. “Hey.”

“It’s like impossible to get service around here.” I sigh.

“It’s a busy night.”

“You come here often?”

He shrugs. “Somewhat. You?”

“Oh, all the time.”

“You do look a little familiar…”
