“Oh-oh. The good looks wear off?”

“Not really. I’ll be going back out, time and again. You know, for a refresher. As a matter of fact, the intermittent thing is his preference and that’s fine with me, too. What are you up to?”

“Relaxing with a friend.”

“Nyberg?”

“Yes. Is this conversation going anywhere? If not... I would like to get back to relaxing. We could talk tomorrow.”

“I wanted to tell you that the Justice Department has assigned the overall investigation of... what happened in California... to a lawyer named Jason Goff,” Cartwright said. “Goff is regarded as the laziest, dumbest, least effective lawyer in the department and is treasured for those qualities. Assign a case to Goff and it’s as good as dead, but nobody can say that Justice didn’t look into it.”

“He does sound useful.”

“Yes. He’s widely known in the bar association as Jerk Goff. He’s already been disciplined twice for inexcusable error. Anyway, I thought you’d like to know. You can go back to relaxing.”

“I will. Want to go up to the Ladies next week?” Letty asked.

“Sure. Let’s do rifles,” Cartwright said. “I know where I can get my hands on a sneak version of what’s gonna be the Army’s new infantry rifle, a 6.8 millimeter XM-5 from Sig, and you’re a Sig girl. The military version of the cartridge will crack Level 4 armor, as I hear it. I’ll give you a call.”

She clicked off and Nyberg asked, “What was that all about?”

“Oh, the usual,” Letty said. “Guns and men.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah... And you know.” She picked up her 938 from the bedstand, cocked and locked, ready to go. “Mostlyguns.”
