“I should punish you for being so stubborn.”

A crease formed between Sophia’s brows, and the humor disappeared from her face. She turned her head to the side and sniffed the air.

“Do you smell that?”

Within seconds of her asking, the scent hit my nostrils.

I jerked Sophia up. “Get dressed. Something is absolutely burning. We need to get out of here.”

Then I looked over to the pile of clothes on the chair. Fuck, if there was a fire, Sophia couldn’t wear what she had on before. I rushed to one of the cabinets the club kept stocked in each playroom for aftercare.

Opening it, I scanned the contents and pulled out a pair of lounge pants and a shirt, tossing them to Sophia. “Put this on over your other clothes. If there is a fire, it will protect you until we get outside.”

Barely a minute later, the fire alarm sounded, and the lights went out.

“We have to move.” Sophia urged. “Whatever’s happening, it’s on this side of the building. The smoke is getting heavier. If the sprinklers go off, we won’t be able to see anything. It also means we are in the area of the fire. Sprinklers don’t go off in the entire building, only in triggered areas.”

“How do you know anything about sprinklers?” I grabbed two blankets and draped them over Sophia and me for added cover.

“I like investigation shows. I learned a few things.”

“Well, arson investigator, we must get out of here.”

When I opened the door, a massive black cloud of smoke billowed into the room. We both coughed and then covered our mouths.

We stepped out of the room into darkness. A red arrow on the ground at the far end of the corridor indicated the emergency exit was in that direction.

We slowly worked our way down the hallway. Knowing it was my duty to ensure people got out, I opened various playrooms, checking they were empty. Luckily, none so far were occupied.

Just as we reached the arrow, a boom rocked the building.

“Damon.” Sophia grabbed hold of me.

“I’m here.”

A surge of heat pushed through from the side where we’d just left, and relief washed over me. In the next second, the sprinklers triggered.

“See. I told you.”

“Sophia, I don’t care about sprinklers. Move. There’s the exit.”

Instead of waiting for her to follow directions, I threw her over my shoulder and ran, not putting her down until we reached the outside.

“What the hell, Damon.” Her incredulous glare had me pulling her to me and holding her tight.

I turned to see fire blooming through the roof of the kitchen section of the club.

The private member rooms were right near there.

I closed my eyes and kissed the top of Sophia’s head. I’d gotten her out of danger.

Finally, I’d done something right with her.

“Pierce, we have a problem.” Ventana came up from behind me.

Ash covered his face, and the worry etched across his features wasn’t something I’d ever seen before.

“What do you need me to do?”
