“As it stands, that property is still in Frank and June Jones’ names. Ruby’s namehasbeen added to another document tied to the property, by a Daniel Jones—her grandfather, I’m assuming? And the land passing on to Ruby is contingent on her marrying, which is twisted as fuck, but you see that sometimes in large properties like this. And it’s worth alotof money, so that asswipe isn’t letting it go.”

“Junior’s a real estate agent, so he must’ve known allabout this.” I want to hit something so bad right now, preferably that motherfucker. “Wait…so everything is already signed and Junior just needs the marriage to happen, and it’s his. Am I…understanding this right?”

“That’s it. Yep.” Sutton sighs.

“So, if she were to be married to someone else…would it belong to her already?”

Wyatt laughs. “His wheels are turning now.”

“She’d just need the marriage license signed with witnesses showing that she’s married, and it’d be a done deal.”

I lean back in my seat in shock, and then I start laughing.

“What’s going on? Is someone else with you?” Theo asks.

“I think that’s him,” Wyatt says. “Are you losing it, brother?”

“Give him a minute,” Sutton barks. “He’s obviously upset. Are you crying?” he asks softly.

That just makes me laugh harder.

They continue their assessments of my sanity while I wipe my eyes and try to stop wheezing from laughing so hard.

When I blow out a long breath, Wyatt clears his throat. “Do you feel better?”

“I have something to tell you guys,” I say. “Ruby and I got married…the day after Thanksgiving.”

“What the fuck?”

“Are you serious right now?”

“Who even are you?”

They all three go off at once.

Cursing, laughing, yelling at me.

It continues for a while until I yell back, “Okay, enough. I did it and I’d do it again. It was fucking beautiful, all right? We’ll have a ceremony between Christmas and New Year’s so everyone can celebrate with us.”

“You were just going to keep it a secret, weren’t you?” Wyatt says.

“Hell, yes,” I say.

That sends them on another round.

When things finally settle down, Sutton says, “Do you have the marriage license with you?”

“Yes.” I glance over at my backpack in the seat next to me.

“Good. And will you be going back to Ruby’s in the morning?”

“I’m sitting in my car behind her barn now, hidden behind some trees.”

“The fuck?” Theo says.

“I don’t trust the ex, okay? Ruby was afraid of what he’d do if he saw me, and I’m not leaving her alone out here.”

“Well, we’re about an hour in, and I don’t want to wake you if you do decide to sleep,” Sutton says. “Just let us know when you’re coming out of hiding.”
