My cheeks flush with the praise and the sound of his voice. “I’m glad you like it,” I say softly.

He’s quiet as he takes a few more bites, but his eyes close with rapt appreciation with each new taste. He finally sets his fork down and looks up at me, startling me with his focus.

“You haven’t had your heart broken?” he asks.

I shake my head.

“What was the deal with Junior?”

“If I’d felt what I should’ve felt for him, I would be heartbroken.”

He studies me, waiting for me to continue, and when I don’t, he says, “Did you know you didn’t love him?”

“I was worried that I didn’t love him like I should, but since I’ve never felt more for anyone than I did for him, it seemed…well, I had a lot of sleepless nights about it.” I rub my finger over the rim of the plate and think about all those sleepless nights. “I talked to my mom and cousin about it a lot, and I tried to postpone the wedding a few times, telling Junior I didn’t think I was ready.”

“What did he say?”

“It made him mad, and he said that we’d spent too much on the wedding to change it…and he couldn’t get time off later in the year because of work. But I knew none of that was true. His family was paying for the rehearsal dinner and that was it. I either paid for everything myself or it was donated by sponsors as long as I made posts about it.”

“The night you got here, you said something about him marrying you for your property.”

I make a face. “I can’t believe that wasn’t even two weeks ago. I sure made an embarrassment of myself that night, didn’t I?”

“Don’t do that,” he says, leaning in.

“Do what?”

“Put yourself down.”

My face heats and I stare at my plate to distract myself from his intensity. “I overheard him making fun of me with his groomsmen before the wedding. It was humiliating, and yet, every mile I drove away from him, I felt like I’d been given a gift in seeing his true colors. There were red flags all along, but I assumed it was my eccentricities that were always going to be problematic in a relationship. Truth was, he was just a jerk. And I hate that he has our land, but I’m making my peace with that. What I can’t make peace with is that he has my emus.”

He clenches his jaw. “You said he hates them.”

“He does.”

“Then we need to figure something out.”

I laugh and shake my head. “You’ve done enough, believe me. What else can I do for you, is what I want to know?”

He shoves his hair back as it falls forward. “Can you give me a haircut?”

CHAPTER TEN

THE HILLS ARE ALIVE WITH THE SOUND OF SILENCE

CALLUM

“I givekillerhaircuts,” Ruby says a little too exuberantly.

My eyes narrow as she bounces in front of me. She’s wearing this grey matching sweater and leggings getup that is staggering from every angle. It takes a force I’m not sure I possess to keep my eyes trained on her face and not the tits that are now at eye level. They’re true perfection. Even better than that chocolate pie she made, which was rightup there with magnificence. Best damn pie I’ve ever had, but her tits make my dick weep, and that’s just the truth.

Her neck and shoulders are graceful, her long, toned legs a distraction in themselves. But the view in the back is gonna do me in. Since the moment I saw the way those ribbed sweater leggings are hugging her curvy ass, I’ve been at odds with maintaining eye contact and trying to catch a peek of her backside.

And it’s not like her eyes are any safer.

They’re warm and sparkling with energy and passion.

“Don’t worry.” She laughs. “I’m good at this. It’ll be great.”
