CALLUM

Good God, the things this woman is doing to me.

First of all, I slept with one eye trained on my door, hoping against hope that she’d pay another visit to my room.

Didn’t happen.

And then I overheard her telling—I’m assuming her ex—that she hadn’t been satisfied in bed…and that stayed with me all day.

Now what she said last night about thelack oforgasms beforemakes a lot more sense, and it will probably keep me up again tonight as well.

How can someone who looks like Ruby not be getting worshipped on the regular?

Not to mention, she’sgreat.

I don’t even like people, but I like her.

I’m not surprised that she’s been scarce today. I had a feeling, after our night and the way she wilted when she realized I’d heard her this morning, that she wouldn’t be her extra bubbly self who wants to help in whatever way possible.

Still, it’s almost dinnertime before I see her again.

When she comes downstairs looking dressed to kill in tight jeans and a pale pink sweater that shows a little skin on each shoulder, I fight the urge to haul her fireman style to my room and show her a thing or two about getting satisfied.

Her expression is sheepish when she looks at me. “I’m sorry to ask this of you,” she says, “but are yousureit’s okay if Dolly stays here? At least until I can talk to my uncle about it.”

I frown. “I wouldn’t have offered if it wasn’t okay.”

Relief floods her face. “Thank you. Thank you for everything, Callum. Staying here has been”—she shakes her head—“I can’t even tell you…it’s been healing and restful…and your company has been really nice.”

I nod and try to smile, but then preoccupy myself with picking up her bag. For some reason, I have the strange urge to convince her to stay a little longer.

“I’ll be back to take care of Dolly, so you don’t have to worry about any of that.”

“Enjoy your time with Pierre. Just text me if you ever want me to feed her. I don’t mind doing it. I’m out there all day anyway.”

She smiles. “Thank you.”

“Hey…how are the burns today?”

Her nose crinkles. “You’re so sweet to check on that each day. There’s one area that’s going to take a while to go away, I think. It’s not hurting quite as much though.”

I nod. “Let me know if you need any more of the stuff Wyatt brought over and I can bug him about it.”

“You’re the best, Callum.”

She steps forward, and my heart trips over itself. Her hands rest on my shoulders and she leans in and kisses my cheek.

She smells so sweet, and her lips feel like the softest bit of heaven on my skin.

“If you thinkI’mthe best, you need to meet more people,” I say under my breath.

She giggles, stepping back and looking up at me. “Nope. You can’t convince me you’re not the biggest teddy bear in Landmark Mountain.”

I lift an eyebrow and shake my head. “You haven’t been anywhere but right here. Of course I’m the best when all you’ve seen is Bill…and cows and goats…”

“Don’t forget your whole family,” she adds.

“Right,” I say, suddenly at a loss.
